Rex married Kristina, the daughter of Bill Sohn in 1991 and moved to Charleston in 1993. Bill and Rex opened a trade shop in downtown Charleston, where they built a reputation as old world, high caliber designers and engravers. The shop became a family business with Bill’s wife, Sally and Kristina fulfilling custom orders jewelers in Charleston - and the Southeast. Simply put, Sohn and McClure became known for quality craftsmanship and extraordinary service. In 2000, we opened our first retail store and custom design studio on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston. In 2002 we opened our second store on Folly Road in South Windermere and Bill became the managing partner. In 2013, we moved to a new, spacious store was opened and now provides our clients with a rarity in downtown Charleston – parking. Rex is the managing partner. Each store is owned equally by Rex McClure and Bill Sohn, enabling them to integrate their expertise, to offer a broader selection and to provide enhanced value to their growing clientele.
Historic Downtown Charleston. We have grown our customer base and standing in the community leading to the relocation and expansion into our new location in the Ansonborough district of downtown Charleston. Ansonborough was Charleston's first suburb, laid out on lands outside the Grand Modell. Ansonborough takes its name from George Anson (1697-1762) who, as the 26-year-old captain of the H.M.S. Scarborough was sent on patrol duty in South Carolina waters, to protect the region from pirates. The area, bounded on the north in early days by Boundary (now Calhoun) Street, and including a tract between King Street and the Cooper River, and running south to a line halfway between Society and Wentworth streets, was part of an original grant to the immigrant, Isaac Mazyck, in 1696, and contained about 90 acres. Custom design and hand engraving are the hallmarks of our Ansonborough House.
South Windermere. William Ackerman, the son of Hungarian immigrants, grew up in a small coal-mining town in Pennsylvania, with a community of about 35 Orthodox Jewish families who came from the same region of Hungary. He married Jennie Shimel of Charleston, South Carolina, and worked there as an attorney, joining her father, Louis Shimel, in his practice. He developed the suburban neighborhood and shopping center, South Windermere, and was a founder of the Conservative synagogue, Emanu-El. This store specializes in a selection of unique gift seldom seen elsewhere.
