Since 1834, Sligo Steel has been the St. Louis area's leading distributor of structural steel beams, bars, plate, sheet, and tube. Today, with over 200,000 square feet of warehouse space, its fleet of flatbed delivery trucks, and locations throughout Illinois, Sligo is able to supply fabricators, constructors, OEM's, and machine shops from St. Louis to Chicago with aluminum, stainless, galvanized, and hot/cold rolled metal products all proudly manufactured in the USA. But Sligo doesn't just stop at quick delivery and quality products. With their state of the art full service center, Sligo can custom prepare your steel products to your specs so that you can stay on time and under budget.
Sligo Steel was founded on the St. Louis riverfront by two Irish immigrants in 1834 under the name Sligo Iron Store, and was the first steel distributor west of the Mississippi. At the time, St. Louis was undergoing rapid expansion as the city was the major hub for goods and travelers heading to the western territories. Sligo grew quickly through the middle 1800’s and extended their operations to include stables for their delivery horses and carriages, an iron foundry fifty miles south of the city, a national distribution catalogue, a fabrication and machining facility, and even a sporting goods factory. Fueled by a labor force comprised mostly of Irish immigrants, Sligo found itself to be the economic and cultural center of St. Louis’s first large immigrant neighborhood; the “Kelly Patch”.
Throughout the twentieth century as the US steel market grew, Sligo stayed committed to St. Louis and consolidated its structure to focus on the retail and wholesale of steel goods to local dealers and end users. In 1997, Sligo was purchased by Omega Steel (a national pipe and tube distributor based in St. Louis) as a means to expand Omega’s local market share. In 2007, after one hundred seventy three years of operating on the St. Louis riverfront, the Sligo warehouse was purchased by Pinnacle Entertainment for the construction the Lumiere casino, and Sligo moved its operations just over the Mississippi river to Madison, IL.
Today Sligo operates out of the Omega/Sligo warehouse in Madison and caters to walk-in customers, fabricators, constructors, machine shops, and dealers, throughout the St. Louis metro area and all along the I-55 corridor through Illinois (Sligo has a second location in Decatur, IL. which focuses primarily on agricultural industry). With its fleet of delivery flatbeds, and full access to Omega’s service center, Sligo is able to offer a myriad of products and services delivered to anyone in the middle Mississippi and Illinois river valley.
