S & S Machinery Co. was in its infancy.  It was that year that S & S introduced its first battery-powered scoop (pictured right).  The product would change immensely over the next 25 years, but S & S’s dominance in battery-powered equipment would not.  With as high as 80% of the market share in battery-powered mining equipment, S & S became one of the most successful companies the mining industry has ever seen.  With immensely popular battery tractor, scoop, and hauler models, the Simmons name became synonymous with battery-powered equipment throughout the coalfields, and even the world.  With a commitment to product development and intensely efficient production systems, S & S maintained its standard of excellence in battery-powered equipment for nearly 30 years.
