Simba Recycling developed and implemented an Environmental, Health & Safety Management System in order to document the company’s best EH&S business practices, to better satisfy the requirements and expectations of its stakeholders and improve the overall management of the company.
Simba Recycling’s EH&S Management System meets the requirements of the international standard ISO 14001:2004, OHSA 18001:2007 and addresses the EH&S issues associated with business activities, operations, services and products.
Along with the above mentioned system, Simba Recycling has also developed and implemented
A policy for managing used and end-of-life electronic equipment that is based on a
“reuse, recover, dispose” hierarchy of responsible management strategies and covers
materials management on site and throughout the Recycling Chain. This is an Internationally recognized standard referred to as R2 or Responsible Recycling Practices.
Below are our three policies to adhere to the above mentioned standards of ISO14001, OHSA 18001 & R2 Practices:
Simba’s Environmental Policy is to protect, utilize, and manage our natural resources in order to prevent pollution, to continually improve our environmental footprint, and to comply with applicable legal and other requirements.
Simba’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy is to prevent injury and ill health to our workforce and to continually improve the performance of the OH&S management system, while complying to applicable legal and other requirements.
To this end:
(1) The Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring that their employees are trained in approved work procedures to obtain optimal output without accidents and injuries and to ensure that employees follow safe work methods and related regulations.
(2) All personnel are required to support the OH&S program and make health and safety a part of their daily routine and to ensure that they are following safe work methods and all personnel will be held accountable for implementing the OH&S program
Simba’s Responsible Recycling (R2) Practices Policy is to manage used and end-of-life electronics equipment that is based on a “reuse, recover, dispose” hierarchy of responsible management strategies and covers materials management on site and throughout the Recycling Chain. The hierarchy shall be prioritized as follows:
(1) Reuse – Simba will take all practical steps to direct properly functioning equipment and components to reuse unless a customer directs otherwise,
(2) Materials Recovery – Simba will separate as appropriate, through manual dismantling and/or mechanical processing, the materials in equipment and components that are not directed to reuse and direct them to properly-equipped materials recovery facilities when technically and economically feasible.
(3) Energy Recovery or Disposal – Simba will direct remaining material to properly-equipped energy recovery and/or disposal facilities in conformity with the R2 standard requirements for handling focus materials.
This policy is consistent with Simba’s Focus Material Management Plan
To this end:
All supervisors are responsible for ensuring that their employees are trained in approved work procedures to ensure responsible recycling practices for all electronics that pass through the facility and downstream vendors.
Simba will only exports equipment and components containing Focus Materials to countries that legally accept them.
All personnel will be held accountable for implementing the R2 program.
Having these policies in place makes our Management and staff continually call for improvement in the above mentioned areas. With this in mind, we invite any of our vendors or customers to comment or question our activities if it does not hold upto the EH&S standards or R2 practices.
Recycling and Reuse are “Recycling” industry words intentionally connected. Keeping them in the same sentence brings top of mind awareness that there are two options with commodities that used to be referred to as trash.
The efforts to redirect waste away from our landfills is a $236.3 billion dollar industry which has created 575,000 jobs and focuses on
either reusing or recycling six commodity types referred to as Major Material Groups.
As a business if you are not just thinking of recycling as dumping trash into a nicely colored trash can you might actually benefit from the industry.
