History of Schmitt Recycling and Disposal GmbH & Co. KG
In the eighties the idea of recycling became more important. Wolfgang Schmitt is observing this development with increasing attention. In 1985 he and his wife Maria Schmitt decided to take on the subject and founded the company Abholdienst Schmitt in Thalau with the aim of collecting, sorting and recycling recyclable materials.
In addition to the main job, waste paper and scrap from friends, neighbors and acquaintances were collected in the car and a trailer and stored temporarily in the garage. Furthermore, the family offered clearing out. After a short time, the premises became too small and a small hall was rented in Schmalnau. At this point in time, customers requested that the paper should no longer be delivered loose, but rather in pressed bales. A used baler, a small tarpaulin truck and a forklift were purchased. By recommending them, even small commercial customers turned to the pick-up service and the company grew so that this hall too became too small. In 1986 the family moved to an old farm in Rodges to be closer to customers and to be able to combine family and business life. because Maria Schmitt had to deal with the upbringing of the three children, the considerable renovation work and the entire administration on her own. Wolfgang Schmitt still had his main job as a truck driver. The former cowshed became a production hall. The first temporary workers were hired and the range of services expanded to include shredding and sorting plastic. Since many customers also delivered and recycling was the top priority, the name was no longer up to date and so the Schmitt collection service became Schmitt Recycling & Disposal. An inquiry from a major customer called for the purchase of a container vehicle. Now the smooth process could no longer be guaranteed without Wolfgang Schmitt as a full-time employee and he gave up his permanent position in 1992 in order to be available to the company with full strength.
From now on there was no stopping the development. And the area in the middle of the village is too small. In 1995 a plot of land was acquired in the West industrial park and construction work began immediately. Despite various setbacks, the production hall with a high-performance baling press was able to move into the same year.
The Schmitt couple specialized in the finishing and sorting of high quality waste paper, metal and plastic. They skillfully use this know-how to win over new customers such as printing companies and publishers.
In order to expand the range of services, other recyclable materials such as waste wood, scrap and packaging materials were continuously added to the portfolio.
In 1998, Schmitt Recycling & Disposal was one of the first companies in the area to be certified as a waste management company due to its qualifications, which is still in place today.
In 2000, increasing administrative expenses forced the construction of an office building. This year turned out to be one of the toughest in the company's history. Rapid, unforeseen price drops hit the company hard. The couple were about to give up their business. The belief in the correctness of the act and the support of the house bank mobilized all forces of the family and the employees to continue.
After the situation had eased somewhat, the couple received the offer to purchase a skip truck with associated containers for construction sites.
Brief considerations later, it was clear that an expansion of the service could be a further pillar in order not to be exclusively dependent on the recycling markets.
The purchase of new vehicles and new legal requirements made it impossible to manage the administration with just one person.
In 2003, the son-in-law Andreas Gierth, who has just successfully completed his training as a forwarding agent, was won over as an employee. He took over the scheduling of the meanwhile four vehicles, the invoicing and the telephone customer care.
New challenges for the industry were posed in 2005 by the TA-Siedlung, which prohibited the dumping of waste. Further training measures and exchanges with colleagues were therefore an advantage, as new ways of recycling had already been explored.
It is thanks to the continuous reliability, flexibility and professional competence that more and more customers have turned to Schmitt Recycling & Disposal, so that two more container vehicles were acquired in the same year.
In 2006 the daughter Nicole Schmitt, a trained bank clerk, joined the company. Your area of responsibility includes personnel management, accounting and project management.
Since 2008 the company has operated under the name Schmitt Recycling & Disposal GmbH & Co. KG.
Further legal requirements required additional employees in the administration, so that the second daughter, Nadine Gierth, took over the implementation of the electronic verification procedure as well as the invoicing since October 2009. In the same year, external conditions made it possible to buy a neighboring property.
Today we proudly look back on 27 years of company existence, which could not always be achieved so naturally. Only with reliable and motivated employees, some of whom have been with the company for over 20 years, and the cohesion of the family is it possible to survive and enjoy both hard and successful years.
We would like to thank all employees, customers, suppliers and business partners for the successful and hopefully long-lasting and fruitful cooperation.
