History

Saar-Hartmetall und Werkzeuge GmbH

More than 100 years of tool manufacturing

More than 60 years of carbide manufacturing

More than 40 years of PM manufacturing

Saar-Hartmetall und Werkzeuge GmbH was the invention of the Röchling-Rodenhauser induction furnace. With this technology it was already possible in 1910/11 to produce carbon steels in various degrees of hardness, manganese steel, special steels for the production of tools and Röchling high-speed electric steel.

In 1920, tool manufacturing activities were expanded with the establishment of the Buderus-Röchling stainless steel works in Wetzlar. Between 1920 and 1945 they were able to offer their customers tools made of cold work steel, hot work steel, high speed steel, stellite and hard metals. Important products were mining tools, extrusion tools, cold rolls, shear knives, saw blades, HSS turning tools, standard tools with soldered-on HSS, stellite or carbide cutting edges and carbide drawing nozzles. Both the hard metal tools from Wetzlar and the Völklinger tools made with Wetzlar hard metal were sold under the name Miramant . The common name for the high-speed steels was Gigant and for the Stellite Stellamant .

After the restrictions of the war and the factory shutdown from December 1944 to autumn 1945, production was resumed with highly sought-after post-war items such as can sealing tools, cutting blades for cutter bars and smaller shear blades. In addition to the small tools mentioned, cast and forging rolls were also machined and extrusion tools and saw blades with riveted HSS teeth (saw blades with soldered HM teeth only from 1960) were manufactured. The delivery of raw carbide parts changed completely after the war years. The previous raw carbide supplier Röchling-Buderus had lost the production facilities at the beginning of 1945 and no longer wanted to develop this branch. As no hard metal was available in Saarland due to the failure of other German hard metal works and the great interest of the victorious powers in the new material, one had to wait until 1948 the Médur company (Franco-Saarland hard metal company) in Illingen was able to produce raw plates for To deliver turning and planing tools. At the end of 1956, the Röchling Group bought the Médur company and integrated carbide production into the Völklingen plant in parallel with tool production. Both production areas were managed as operating departments of the last Röchling Burbach until 1975. It was only with the establishment of the carbide and tools division in 1976 that inter-company areas such as work preparation and sales became established by 1948 the Médur company (Franco-Saarländische Hartmetall Gesellschaft) in Illingen was able to deliver raw panels for turning and planing tools. In the same year, the production of mining tools was integrated into the carbide and tools division.

It was only through the founding of Saar-Hartmetall und Werkzeuge GmbH as a subsidiary of Saarstahl-Weiterverarbeitung GmbH in 1986 that it became possible to operate independently and under its own name on the market. The product portfolio could be adapted to the requirements of the customers and further developed in line with the market. New opportunities in tool development resulted from our own production of homogeneous and segregation-free powder metallurgical steels. This step became possible because the powder metallurgy of Saarstahl AG, which has been involved in the production and application of PM steels since 1975, was integrated into the organizational structure in 1991.

By taking over the company as part of an MBO (management buy-out) in 2000, Saar-Hartmetall und Werkzeuge GmbH achieved complete independence and complete independence from a group. The last step towards making SHW independent took place between 2005 and 2008 with the relocation of production and administration to Püttlingen-Etzenhofen. This is where SHW manufactures its products from powder to finished product and sells them worldwide.
