RSTW has several vacuum furnaces to offer customers a range of heat treating services.A double chamber furnace, the only one of its kind in New York state, processes high speed steels in a vacuum atmosphere. Double chambers allow for an oil or pressure nitrogen quench. We can process specialty jobs that require vacuum hardening with an oil quench. This furnace has a 500 pound capacity and a 24” x 36” x 18” work zone.A single chamber furnace with six-bar quench capability, accommodates special processing of H-13. Computerized for precise process control and data acquisition, this furnace has a 2500 pound capacity with a 36” x 48” x 36” work/hot zone. A larger furnace is utilized for greater poundage and longer sized materials. It has a capacity of 3500# and a work zone of 36” x 48” x 36”. It offers temperatures up to 2500°F with a pressurized nitrogen quench to 15 psi.
RSTW also offers vacuum tempering. Tempering in inert gas produces cleaner parts, less oxidation and scale through a nitrogen cooling process. In addition to our vacuum services, case hardening and neutral hardening are available for jobs of any size. From a one piece project to a large production job, Internal Quench Allcase Atmosphere furnaces are utilized for parts that need carburizing, carbonitriding or through hardening.Rochester Steel Treating Works, Inc. also offers Ferritic Nitro Carburizing (gas carburizing) which imparts greatly improved wear, fatigue, impact and yield strength properties to a wide range of Carbon Steels, Alloy Steels, Tool Steels and Cast Iron parts. Because FNC can be carried out at low temperatures, core hardness as well as good dimensional control are achieved. FNC also improves corrosion resistance which in many cases eliminates the need for any additional protective plating operations. At the other end of the thermometer we offer deep cryogenic tempering in which tools are subject to temperatures of -300°F which increases their durability and wear resistance. This one time, permanent treatment affects the entire piece, not just its surface. Tools may be new or used, sharp or dull. The change created is uniform throughout the tool and lasts the life of the tool regardless of later finishing operations or resharpening.
