Ritzi Jewelers provides an insurance appraisal with all bridal and engagement diamond rings purchases. Appraisers will charge different fees depending on their expertise, difficulty of the assignment, etc. No single fee structure exists nor would it be fair to suggest what an appraiser might charge. Some charge for the items major diamond size (for example – more for a larger center stone and less for smaller stones). Others may charge a flat fee per item. And, others may charge by the hour. In most cases, a fee that is based on a percentage of the appraised items value is considered unethical in the appraisal industry. In this case, an incentive may exist to inflate the value for a higher fee. If an appraiser quotes a price as a percentage fee this would indicate that industry standards are not being followed. Keep in mind that the most expensive appraiser may not be the best, nor is the least expensive person necessarily the worst. However, with anything, you generally get what you pay for. The short “one-line” appraisal with a value is not enough information to describe your items in detail, has not photos and may not be enough for to satisfy your insurance company. An insurance appraisal is required when an item of jewelry is to be scheduled separately on an insurance policy. Standard coverage may cover some perils, but is generally low. A separate insurance rider on any single item of jewelry will generally cover theft, loss, fire, etc. You will need to refer to your actual policy for explanation of coverage. A proper appraisal will give you proper documentation of your piece(s), photos of your pieces in their current state, inscriptions or certifications, replacement value and other pertinent documentation.
