Did you know that recycling is now mandatory for most Alameda County businesses, or that commercial organics will be mandatory in July, 2014?  You can comply with local laws and help the environment by participating in a  recycling program offered by Recology East Bay. Whether your business is a one-person operation or you have a thousand employees, there is a recycling program available to fit your needs.

Recology East Bay offers a variety of recycling services to commercial customers, including single-stream recycling for mixed paper, plastic, glass and aluminum containers, as well as commercial organics collection of food, food-soiled paper, and paper towels.

On request, Recology East Bay staff can perform a waste analysis to help determine what materials can be diverted from your business waste stream. We can project your cost savings for new recycling and compost programs and make suggestions on implementation to make the change easy on you and the employees.  Recology also provides recycling posters, employee training, and other customer support to get your new programs off to a good start.

Donate Used or Outdated Office Supplies to East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse 

Before you head to the recycling center or throw things into the dumpster, consider contacting East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse (EBDCR), an ecological treasure trove of art and craft materials, educational supplies, vintage furniture, home décor, paper goods, fabric, and much more. Founded in 1979 by two Oakland public school teachers, the Depot promotes solid waste diversion and resource conservation through the Depot store and environmental education programs.

On Saturday, September 29, 2012, over 100 volunteers from Recology, the employee-owned recycling company, added compost made from food scraps collected at Oakland restaurants to the Hoover Elementary School sustainable garden in support of the school's Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiative, and planted trees and various drought tolerant plants throughout the school grounds.  Consistent with the Recology “WASTE ZERO” rallying cry, volunteers use recycled and reclaimed material to build benches, create pathways and revitalize the soil with nutrient-rich compost and mulch.

As the tenth major volunteer project since the program’s inception in 2007, Recology volunteers accomplished the following:

• Build five benches, construct one kid-height planting table, and repair one existing school bench using 50 pieces of lumber recovered from the Public Disposal and Recycling Area and sorting lines at Recology San Francisco;
   
• Create garden pathways using three tons of recycled concrete generated by crushing operation at Recology San Francisco;
   
• Paint the exterior boards of several large raised planter boxes using five-gallons of recycled white paint also from Recology San Francisco;
   
• Trim, weed, transplant as well as plant over 100 drought-tolerant native plants, including three Sequoia trees using 20 cubic yards of blended compost and 12 cubic yards of arbor mulch from Recology Grover Environmental Products; and
   
• Prep all areas for an irrigation system that will efficiently and effectively water the new plants while conserving this natural resource for the school.

The employee owners of Recology understand it is vital to giving back to and support the communities they serve and actively participate in numerous community improvement opportunities throughout the year.  Environmental education, youth development, and health and wellness initiatives are the primary focus areas of the company’s volunteer program.
