The Ljubljana Regional Center for Waste Management (RCERO Ljubljana) is the largest environmental cohesion project in the country, it started operating at the end of 2015 and takes care of the waste of one third of Slovenia. The regional center consists of an expanded landfill, a wastewater treatment plant and waste processing facilities. The new disposal field has been in use since 2009, the wastewater treatment plant has been operating since 2011, and the construction of facilities for mechanical-biological waste treatment, which was the most demanding part of the project, was completed at the end of 2015.
The key part of the regional center are three facilities in which the mechanical-biological treatment of waste takes place. Two types of waste are processed in these facilities: separately collected biological waste and the rest of mixed municipal waste. Bulky waste is also accepted and sorted.
RCERO Ljubljana, which is co-financed with 61 percent of the funds from the European Cohesion Fund, is an example of good practice in the field of integration and cooperation of municipalities and a connecting element of waste management in Slovenia between municipalities and regions. More than 50 municipalities are currently involved in RCERO, so that RCERO takes care of the waste of one third of Slovenia.
The entire project, for which the European Commission issued a decision in April 2009, on the authority of the Municipality of Ljubljana (MOL) and other municipalities, is managed by the public company JP VOKA SNAGA .
