Pioneer’s Early History & Success
In Atlanta GA, 1946, Pioneer Supply Company (originally Pioneer Neon Supply Company) was founded by two lifelong friends, Mr. Dan Geltner and Mr. Ira Weiss. After a year in Atlanta, they felt that having two locations would be beneficial and Dan relocated to Cleveland Ohio. One year in Cleveland convinced Dan that in Pittsburgh there were four points of the compass available to travel and would better suit the company for future growth. They operated as separate entities, but pooled purchasing and negotiation to get best pricing on products.

With the growth of the companies, Mr. Weiss opened a branch in Birmingham Alabama, and Mr. Geltner purchased a competitor’s branch in Detroit Michigan.In 1985, Pioneer Neon Supply of Pittsburgh was sold to Robert Lando of Pittsburgh, PA and the name was changed to Pioneer Supply Company. The other branches were sold at this time but Pioneer continued in a growth mode, expanding in coverage from Pittsburgh into Northern and Central Pennsylvania and into the Baltimore-Washington DC areas.

In May of 1998, James Davis of Greensburg, PA purchased Pioneer Supply Co., Inc. Jim focused on further expansion of the company and grew the business by opening branches in Cinnaminson, NJ (formerly Pennsauken, NJ) and Baltimore, NJ (Linthicum, Maryland).In May of 2008 Pioneer’s headquarters in Pittsburgh moved to a new and larger warehouse and office facility on the North Side of the city and is now better positioned to service customers throughout current sales areas and beyond.
