About Company

The increasing demand for transport and disposal services from the manufacturing and construction industries led to the foundation of the company Philippen Containerdienst, Leo and Peter Philippen in 1982. It originated from Philippen Tiefbau GmbH, which already had a container truck for its own needs. Since June 2005 we have expanded our range of services by one division.

The frequent demand for emptying containers in the sizes 1.1 to 4.5 cbm has motivated us, even in an economically difficult time (or precisely because of it), to expand our logistics in the vehicle fleet and in the container program in order to be able to offer you an individual alternative . With a special vehicle, we can also offer emptying and recyclable containers in the sizes 1.1 cbm, 1.7 cbm, 2.5 cbm and 4.5 cbm in addition to the containers you already know.

The name of the company Philippen, known in the region for more than 40 years at that time, contributed to the fact that the container service quickly developed into one of the largest service providers in this field. With the commissioning of the waste processing plant (recycling yard) we expanded our business field.

History

If you leafed through the yellow pages in the Aachen area in the 1970s, the name Philippen was often to be found. On closer inspection, it quickly became clear: The family's name actually stood for a close relationship, but also for one of the most successful traditional companies in the region that still exists today.

However, every beginning is known to be difficult. At the beginning of the last century, for example, great-grandfather Philippen made his living by driving stagecoaches. From the westernmost municipality in Germany, Selfkant on the border with the Netherlands, to the urban area of Aachen, it took three to four hours over hill and dale, with the horse always as a loyal companion. Horses were at the beginning of the company's history and determined its further course as well as the family name: In Greek, philos stands for "friend" and hippos for "horse", the first name Philipp, but also the family name Philippen thus means nothing else than "horse friends" .

The grandfather's commitment did not die down, but neither did technological development. So it happened that a stagecoach became several, which increasingly had to give way to motorized vehicles and with the company Johann Philippen Transporte und Fuhrunternehmen, a successful logistics service provider in the Aachen area emerged. Then came the Second World War and with it the arbitrariness of fascism. The vehicle fleet that had been built up over the years was confiscated by the Wehrmacht. Trucks, off-road vehicles, and other equipment disappeared and were no longer available to the company.

Again it should be the horses that ensured the survival of the Philippen family. What the modern trucks could no longer do, the strong draft horses took over and once again advanced to be companions and breadwinners in a seemingly hopeless time. It was not for nothing that the horses had the same names as the offspring, not for nothing that they risked their own lives several times for the welfare of the animals in the hail of bombs during the war. It was only with their help that the entire family could survive these years.

After the war, the company quickly recovered and was part of the rebuilding of the region. An increasingly booming economy, many new orders and the freshly assembled vehicle fleet made it possible. Some of the first trucks and rope excavators in the Aachen area were then in use under the name Philippen. But after the economic upswing, the recession always follows, which is why the family business got into trouble at the beginning of the 1970s and Johann Philippen was forced to give up his life's work because of his age. However, two sons and his 7 children in total did not want to accept that and in February 1974 took the courage to found Philippen Tiefbau and subsequently to continue one of the most sustainable company biographies in the Aachen region.

Here, too, everything started very small: with an old wheelbarrow, a coughing compressor, several shovels and an outdated excavator, the brothers Leo and Peter and a colleague did the first demolition work on houses - no matter what temperature, no matter what Weather. Step by step, the venture of founding a new company turned into a success story with future potential, in which difficult decisions also had to be made. The unreliability of the container service commissioned at the time meant that from 1978 onwards, Philippen also used his own container vehicle for his own use - a problem arose out of a new line of business.

This adaptability was partly responsible for the fact that Philippen continued to prosper under the aegis of Leo and Peter in the years that followed. But in 1989 the next generation was already preparing to take the reins of the company in hand. When Ralf Philippen was to take on the position of technical manager in 1989, father Leo was initially against it. With a lot of diligence and foresight, however, the son went his way and, after having passed the master craftsman's examination, took over the company together with his father in 1994, which subsequently grew into the current Philippen Verwaltung und Tiefbau GmbH.

Today we have around 50 employees and four trainees. Philippen also enjoys an excellent reputation throughout the region and is successful in various business fields for a large number of customers. Without the teamwork of all employees and the great commitment of the Philippen family, this development would have been unthinkable.
