Pallet Hub began in 2019 on Jim and Rachel Shenk's farm in rural Kalona, Iowa. Jim, a farmer by trade paired with 20 plus years of business operations, noticed perfectly good pallets being discarded because there was no market for them. This realization led Jim to bring the pallets home, where he and his sons started sorting, repairing, and salvaging reusable parts.
Their efforts attracted the attention of a local lumber yard, which became their first wholesale buyer. This marked the beginning of their pallet repair business. Over the next few years, Jim and his family expanded their operations, employing more people and acquiring specialized equipment to streamline their processes.
By 2023, Pallet Hub had streamlined its business model to partner with independent pallet suppliers aiming to scale their operations. These suppliers manage their own businesses, while Pallet Hub delivers comprehensive support, efficiency tools, and a steady stream of customers. This collaborative approach not only boosts production but also fosters economic growth in local communities by unlocking new revenue opportunities. This model has empowered us to extend our mission to multiple locations across the U.S. In addition, Jim recognized a growing demand in the custom-built pallet market, which has since become a cornerstone of Pallet Hub’s success.
Pallet Hub's decentralized model, keeps overhead costs low and fosters rapid growth without extensive capital investment in property or equipment. They prioritize sourcing from small businesses, aligning with their values of supporting local economies.
Jim's vision goes beyond business success; it's about strengthening rural communities and preserving the small entrepreneurs. His team manages day-to-day operations, allowing Jim to balance business growth with his passion for farming.
Today, Pallet Hub handles thousands of pallets each week and continues to expand, driven by a commitment to optimism, sustainability, and strong community economics.
