OpenCEL is a cell lysis technology used primarily in two applications in wastewater treatment: anaerobic digestion and Biological Nutrient Removal (BNR). In five years, operating at full scale in a permanent installation in Mesa, AZ, the OpenCEL system has reduced biosolids 30%, increased gas production 60%, and eliminated the need for external supplemental carbon for denitrification. The strongest evidence that OpenCEL actually achieves lysis comes from the BNR application. Other sludge pretreatment systems may break up flocs, but low % increases in gas production signal that they may not be opening cells, and they are not used in BNR. When OpenCEL treated material was used at Mesa to replace methanol as a carbon source, it proved it was opening the cell, for only then would carbon be liberated.
