Olson Engineering, Inc. was founded in 1985 by Mr. Larry Olson, its President and Principal Engineer. Mr. Olson is well-recognized as one of the pioneers in the development, commercialization of instruments, and application of unique Nondestructive Testing (NDT) technologies. As a widely known industry leader, to this day Mr. Olson diversifies the applications of NDT.
Olson Engineering is a Small Business Enterprise (SBE) that provides state-of-the-art Structural and Infrastructure Condition Assessment using a wide variety of NDT technologies, and advanced ground imaging with multiple Geophysical methods for geologic, engineering and hydrologic applications. Investigations are performed domestically throughout the U.S., but also internationally. Projects are conducted for governmental agencies, commercial & private industry, and educational institutions.
Professional staff at Olson Engineering have been carefully assembled to include world class expertise in a wide range of NDT and Geophysical consulting services. The staff range from technicians to Ph.D. engineers, with P.E. registration in 27 states. Collectively the professional staff at Olson have over 100 years’ experience conducting NDT services, and over 90 years’ experience conducting geophysical services. In general the NDT and Geophysics groups work closely together, working with common clientele but servicing different needs to industry. The NDT business group is managed by Mr. Larry Olson on the East Coast and Mr. Dennis Sack (Senior VP / Principal Engineer) at the Corporate Office, while the Geophysics business group is managed by Mr. Phil Sirles (COO / Principal Engineer).
To make Olson have the competitive advantage in both the NDT and Geophysics industry, we have assembled a multidisciplinary group of dedicated people whose educations/degrees include Civil Engineering with strengths in structural, geotechnical, pavement and materials engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, and Geophysics and Geology with strengths in engineering, environmental, and groundwater, and mineral exploration. Together, this combination of professional strengths enable Olson to develop state-of-the-art test/field procedures, and build instruments and software to meet both the routine and unique project needs. As a result, Olson has experience in NDT condition assessment of a wide array of materials including concrete, masonry, steel and other metals, timber, asphalt, and other materials. In addition, the capability to perform geophysical imaging gives Olson the skill present subsurface properties of soil deposits and rock formations in 1D, 2D and 3D using advanced imaging technology.
Below is a short list of services and applications provided by Olson Engineering (expended in detail on this website):
In the 30 years Olson has been in business, we have conducted projects in all 50 United States, as well as around the world providing NDT and/or Geophysical services in Australia, Germany, Canada, Kuwait, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Africa, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Italy, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Japan, China, and the United Kingdom.
Olson has branch offices located across the United States covering the following regions: Rutherford, New Jersey (greater metropolitan New York City area), Manassas, Virginia (greater Washington DC area); and, Wheat Ridge, Colorado (greater Denver Metro area) for the corporate office.
Olson Engineering, Inc. offers consulting services for a wide variety of Non-destructive Testing (NDT) and geophysical investigations.
Olson’s NDT services can test, evaluate, image, measure, and scan almost any type of structural or infrastructure element, and offer options for repair of the concerns found, allowing the risk to be mitigated. Olson’s geophysical imaging services are primarily applied to engineering, environmental and ground water problems helping to determine subsurface conditions that are problematic, anomalous or unpredictable, permitting our clients to better design and minimize risk for construction, site investigation, and drilling. The strength of Olson Engineering is that we have a dedicated team of professional staff that can image and evaluate man-made structures with NDT, and characterize geologic conditions for many applications. The staff of engineers and geoscientists work closely to provide superior evaluation of your structural or site concerns. Olson conducts about 200 projects per year domestically and internationally.
The benefits of NDT include complete diagnosis of visible and hidden structural material conditions with minimal or no damage along with lower cost and reduced risk for the public, owners, contractors, and engineers. Similarly, geophysics is a non-invasive approach to image large volumes of earth materials beneath a site in one-, two- or three-dimensions (1D, 2D or 3D), and uses any existing geotechnical data to calibrate (i.e., ‘ground truth’) the results between, below and beyond drill holes.
Both NDT and geophysical testing are highly technical and interdisciplinary, therefore at Olson Engineering we have assembled a team of highly-educated and experienced professional engineers and geoscientists. The Olson team is continually researching new methods and developing new equipment to remain your experts in the specialty services of NDT and Geophysics. Details on the various services offered and methods used by Olson are available on this site, and can be quickly linked from the column on the right side of this page
Olson Engineering offers a wide variety of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) services to meet the needs of our clients. Our services include the performance of test methods that can detect and characterize unseen damage in almost any type of structure, as well as for quality assurance evaluations of new and replacement infrastructure. Our NDE methods can reveal flaws and defects in structural elements high above the ground, at grade, as well as deep underground in all types of civil structures, whether newly placed or having existed for a millennium.
Olson Engineering has applied NDE methods as part of investigations into the condition of a wide variety of structural types including bridges, buildings, deep foundations, dams, pavements, slabs, tunnels, etc. Olson Engineering will discuss your needs as a client, and help you to develop the testing and evaluation program required to gather the information you need. We are a full-service company that can not only acquire data on the condition of a structure, analyze it, and provide you with easy to understand results, but we can also provide repair suggestions and other solutions to complex structural problems.
