In 1975, Joe O’Brien, had the vision of providing quality steel products with exceptional customer service and O’Brien Steel Service was born. Joe’s motto was “BE EASY TO BUY FROM” and since that first day in 1975, O’Brien Steel has made that motto the cornerstone of our foundation. We remain a family owned and operated company which now spans three generations and still focusing on Joe’s motto. What truly sets O’Brien steel apart from the competition is our team of professionals that embraces our desire to make servicing you, the customer our top priority. 

The original operation was started in a very modest Quonset hut in East Peoria, IL. By 1978, O’Brien Steel had quickly outgrown that small facility and moved across the river to Peoria, into the former Hyster Building. This location still serves as the company headquarters today. From the beginning, Joe made it a priority to reinvest into the company so that O’Brien Steel would remain strong well into the future. This still holds true as improvements to our equipment, facilities, and systems are routinely made to further the value opportunities for our customers’ changing needs. 

In 2012, O’Brien Steel achieved growth through the acquisition of Wausau Steel and added another facility in Milwaukee. In January of 2016, O’Brien Steel acquired the assets of Meta Tec in Lacon, IL and greatly broadened the processing services that we can now competitively provide.
