Advantages of CFD Analysis

CFD analysis is used recreate the hydraulic flow of any customer site within a virtual laboratory, which allows Norcan to analyze various modernization options. Designs are based on each customer’s site-specific parameters.

CFD analysis fits within tight project schedules and provides results that are accurate to traditional IEC model tests.

The application of CFD analysis is of great benefit to the modern small hydro industry, and provides results that are easily transferred over to structural analysis as it works with the same or compatible computer models as used in structural analysis (FEA) software, ensuring all designs are fully verified for safety and longevity. Seamless data transfer from CFD model to CNC manufacturing ensures that manufacturing is precise and cost effective.

CFD analysis detects sensitive areas prone to cavitation or high stress, which can then be eliminated through design optimization.

CFD analysis offers a complete set of flow simulation results, giving detailed diagnostics of flow through the turbine passages and optimizing overall efficiency.

CFD analysis provides virtual access to areas which are physically impossible to reach in a real laboratory, allowing the observation of stationary and rotating coordinate systems, with practically unlimited perspectives to the observer.

Using CFD we can quantify the economic benefits of modernization and/or upgrade of turbine components, for the purpose of investment feasibility planning.
