NORTH ENERGY has helped to pioneer the development of renewable energy and sustainability across the UK since 1991. Our services include feasibility studies; carbon management and life cycle assessment programmes; energy efficiency surveys; planning support; and biomass, wind, and solar energy projects. We have clients in almost every industry sector. We have two offices, one in the North East of England and one in Yorkshire.
Early History
North Energy began in 1991 when the current directors were part of a team campaigning against proposals for a new nuclear power station to be based at Druridge Bay on the Northumberland coast. After a successful campaign, the team decided a more positive option would be to attempt to increase the amount of renewable energy installed within the region. A new consultancy was born!
The company was initially based in one of the directors' (Bridget Gubbins) spare rooms at home, before suitable premises were found in Morpeth, Northumberland. Right from the start, the team comprised a unique and strong blend of academic background and knowledge, local authority planning expertise, and practical business acumen and campaigning and negotiating skills. Then, as now, the team were passionate and committed to developing the concepts of renewable energy and sustainability. The early years were spent advising interested parties on the contribution that alternative forms of energy could make to specific projects. The solutions were more geared to solving site specific energy problems in off-gas / off-grid areas rather than the grander vision we all see today. There was little awareness at that time of climate change issues, and certainly no encouragement from political leaders to pursue cleaner energy.
During those years we advised on many school projects, as well as those organisations with their own on-site energy issues. Then as now, our planning expertise helped to guide many projects through the complicated planning systems towards successful implementation. Gradually, forward thinking public sector organisations, as well as private sector companies with a strong interest in environmental issues were beginning to take a lead in seeking greener renewable energy solutions. Renewable energy was already very well established in many European countries as well as USA and Canada. The technologies were available to the UK market, and North Energy offered a way of increasing their acceptance in the United Kingdom. Demand for North Energy's services was increasing, and the team was expanded to include electrical engineering expertise and biomass knowledge.
