On October 1, 2001, MISA was formed from the merger of the Iron and Steel Divisions of Marubeni America Corporation and the Metals Division of ITOCHU International Inc.
Marubeni-Itochu Steel Canada Inc. (MISC) and Marubeni-Itochu Steel Mexico, S.A. de C.V. (MISMEX) were formed as subsidiaries of MISA.
MISA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Marubeni-Itochu Steel Inc. (MISI), which was also born on October 1, 2001 by the merger of the Steel Divisions of Marubeni Corporation and ITOCHU Corporation in Japan.
The merger of the steel divisions of the two major Japanese General Trading firms was the first of its kind.
