Company History
Metal Innovations Inc. is a certified woman-owned business and FAA Repair Station that was founded by Kim and Craig Wilmes in January of 1996. The initial investment attributed to the formation of Metal Innovations Inc. was comprised of the proceeds from the sale of a pickup truck and an $8000 inheritance from Kim’s grandmother. The business began in a garage where Kim wrote MII’s FAA Repair Station Manual. After its approval, MII acquired its first repair contract from Horizon Airlines, modifying 80 over-wing emergency exit doors for the Fokker F-28 fleet.
In 1998 Metal Innovations, Inc. outgrew its facility located at the Wilmes’ personal residence and was moved to a 10000 sq. foot warehouse in Canby, Oregon. At this time the business was primarily focused on off wing repair of air carrier composite and sheet metal components.
In 2001, after the 911 tragedy, business for the suppliers of the air carrier markets stopped immediately and all work and receivables associated with the air carriers were put on an indefinite hold. This almost caused a complete shutdown of Metal Innovations, Inc., however, Craig and Kim knew that diversification was the key to survival and were committed to doing everything necessary to keep Metal Innovations, Inc. intact, including the sale of their personal residence. After almost a year of hard work, the new strategy paid off, and work began coming through door from various facets of industry. By early 2003 MII had diversified and expanded into offering composite repair, engineering, and parts manufacturing services to the corporate, air carrier, air cargo, and heavy lift helicopter markets.
In 2003 MII relocated to the Aurora State Airport. This move opened new doors, leading to new projects, such as major overhauls of complete aircraft. It also allowed MII to gain approvals from the FAA to increasing its list of approved capabilities.
In July of 2008 Metal Innovations, Inc. purchased the Aurora Jet Center, which is a full service Fixed Base Operation located at the south end of KUAO. This acquisition created new jobs and gave way to an increased presence on the field.
Metal Innovations, Inc. has grown from a residential garage in 1996 to over 35 employees in 2016. MII’s outstanding reputation in the industry, long-term contracts, and outstanding customer relationships has set a foundation for continued growth and expansion for years to come.
