When Chris and Michelle Michael started Meaco in 1991 the aim was to specialise in monitoring and control equipment for museums and art galleries. In 1992 Meaco developed the world's first radio based environmental monitoring system in conjunction with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. This gave Meaco a much higher profile and over the next 10 years Meaco established itself as one of the most important suppliers of humidity monitoring and control equipment to museums across Europe.
In 1999 Meaco were approached by Mitsubishi Electric to become their sole distributor for their range of portable dehumidifiers in the UK. This was the start of a successful relationship that flourished for the next 20 years.
In 2005 Chris and Michelle sold the museum side of the business to concentrate their efforts on the rapidly expanding sales of domestic dehumidifiers.
In 2009 the expansion continued and Meaco became a manufacturer of dehumidifiers using the experience gained from working in museums, distributing Mitsubishi Electric and listening to customers to ensure that each and every dehumidifier not only solves a problem but will also improve the user’s quality of life.
Meaco is now regarded internationally as a major player in the industry selling to 20+ countries throughout Europe, North America and South Africa. Export makes up 50% of the business and creates an expanding number of jobs here in the UK.
Meaco is seen by suppliers, customers, and competitors alike as a benchmark for quality and development. We have pushed the industry to reduce the energy consumption of dehumidifiers and it has been pleasing to see the way in which many of our competitors have followed our lead in this area and now customers can benefit from lower electricity bills.
Next for us was noise and this is an area where we made massive gains in 2018 and we continue to push to reduce the noise level of our products without compromising the low energy consumption.
In 2019 we removed all plastic hoses from our dehumidifiers reducing the amount of plastic going into waste by 75,000 metres per year. We continue to call upon other manufacturers to follow suit so that between us we can reduce by a factor of millions the amount of plastic being used unnecessarily each year across the world.
In 2020 we have replaced several hundred thousands of pieces of polystyrene in our packaging with recyclable cardboard. This does cost us more and reduces profits but it is an important move forward to reducing the strain on the planet and again is something that all manufacturers should look to do.
We are very proud to have won all of the awards for our products from Which?, Good Housekeeping, QuietMark and Stiftung Warentest to name but a few, but we are prouder still of the great feedback that we get on a daily basis from customers about how much they appreciate the support of our dedicated customer support team and how much our products help them in their daily lives.
As a company for many years we have supported youth sport locally through rugby and swimming in particular and now also enjoy working closely with the local David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation (DSWF) to support their elephant orphanage in Zambia.
We like to chat to our customers to ensure that they are selecting the correct product for their needs
