For more than 50 years, M.C. Dean, Inc. has supported local businesses along with the economic initiatives of the city of Washington D.C. M.C. Dean, Inc. helped establish one of the earliest technical apprenticeship programs in the city - the apprenticeship program at the Phelps School, more than twenty years ago. The chairman of M.C. Dean, Inc. was a member of the Apprenticeship Advisory Council. Today, M.C. Dean, Inc. is the school’s largest sponsor for technical vocational training. M.C. M. C. Dean, Inc.’s accredited Electrical Apprenticeship Program provides top notch classroom instruction and unparalleled on-the-job training to enable candidates to become licensed Journeyman Electricians in four years. Through this program, M.C. Dean, Inc. currently teaches, trains, mentors, and provides on-the-job experience to more than 150 apprentices.
Both Federal and state labor departments have recognized the Electrical Apprenticeship Program, including the U.S. Department of Labor, Virginia, Maryland and even the District of Columbia, where M.C. Dean, Inc. has distinguished itself as the largest employer of electrical apprentices.
M.C. Dean, Inc. is working closely with select District of Columbia schools to recruit D.C. public school students for entry-level electrical careers, including our Apprenticeship program. The purpose of this program is to identify the best and brightest bound students for employment consideration with M.C. Dean, Inc.
Future development of the program will include coordination with post-secondary apprenticeship related instructions in the District and an articulation agreement with the University of the District of Columbia or other appropriate higher education institution in the District. This program will be modeled on an already successful Northern Virginia Community College program, through which apprentices who have successfully completed apprenticeship related instructions are eligible for credit toward their Associate's Degree.
Selected partner schools will launch an electrical program for grades 11-12 which includes a qualified instructor, NCCER curriculum textbooks and instructor materials, and adequate lab space.
M.C. Dean, Inc. has established a merit-based scholarship for company apprentices, channeling high performing employees into the A.A.S (Associate of Applied Science) in Electrical Technology degree program, offered through the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). Completing this apprenticeship training contributed 30 credit hours towards the AAS degree.
This merit scholarship now makes it possible for M.C. Dean, Inc. employees to continue their education, even when unable to afford tuition. Employees may apply for the scholarship, worth over $5,000, by completing a qualification form, creating their ideal class schedule, and writing a narrative of the benefits they expect to receive from the program and share with M.C. Dean, Inc. Scholarship recipients are selected based on existing job performance, evaluation scores, supervisor feedback, and a narrative summary of how the degree will positively affect their performance and the company’s business results.
M.C. Dean, Inc. routinely makes every practical attempt to maximize its purchase of total annual services, supplies and hardware from small or small, disadvantaged concerns. Dean, Inc.’s cost effectiveness.
In 2001, M.C. Dean, Inc. placed over ten million dollars (more than 25% of our total purchases) in supplies/subcontracts with small, minority and women owned businesses, where more than 80% of these purchases were not on projects requiring or affirmatively encouraging such participation.
