Marin Sanitary Service is a local, family owned and operated business that has served the community since 1948. Over the decades we have grown with our customers, and believe in the power of recycling to conserve our natural resources. We are proud to provide curbside recycling, solid waste, yard waste and food scraps hauling, safe household hazardous waste disposal and many other services that are helping to achieve Marin County’s goal of zero waste.MSS began in 1948 when together the families Garbarino, Segale, Zappetini, Marconi and Zanotti left San Francisco and ventured into the growing communities of Marin County to start a new garbage service. In 1994, the County of Marin granted a franchise for additional unincorporated areas around San Rafael. MSS currently services more than 33,000 residential and commercial accounts.Now there are 3 generations of Garbarinos working at Marin Sanitary. The family has toiled long and hard over the years to get Marin County to recycle over 74% of all waste. The business has grown and expanded into three separate divisions in order to address every facet of waste management and recycling.Since MSS was founded its evolution has closely paralleled that of Marin County itself. We have grown philosophically with our customers, and believe in the power of recycling to preserve our natural resources. As a result, we are well on our way to achieving our goal of zero waste.Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) – Provides weekly residential and commercial waste collection, street sweeping, organic and recyclables pick-up services.Marin Recycling Center (MRC) – Accepts and processes collected recyclables including glass bottles and jars, aluminum and tin cans, plastic containers #1-7, waste papers, cardboard, and hazardous waste. The center also provides community education through the Environmental Classroom.Marin Resource Recovery Center (MRRC) – Accepts and processes non-hazardous materials through a customized system of screens, conveyors, blowers, magnets, and hand-sorting. It also offers debris box rental.Marin Household Hazardous Waste Facility (MHHWF) - Accepts hazardous materials from Marin residents and businesses.Theft of recyclable materials is illegal and may even put you at risk for identify theft. Marin Sanitary Service is partnering with the cities and towns in our jurisdictions to help prevent recyclables thefts and we need your help.Did you know that MSS provides confidential document shredding services to families and businesses throughout Marin County to help prevent identity theft and protect client privacy.We know that you work hard to sort and separate your recyclables and garbage. But, once they are separated and set out at the designated curbside collection location, only Marin Sanitary Service can lawfully remove the material.The Garbarinos practically invented recycling. Hauling garbage in giant burlap bags on his back over the steep hills of San Francisco, John Garbarino quickly learned that people threw away more than they should, and most of it could be reused. We currently service more than 30,000 residential accounts, almost one third of the population of Marin.We offer several cart options and can collect a variety of materials curbside. We only ask that customers follow a few curbside collection guidelines to help us keep things running smoothly. In addition to our curbside collection, we also offer additional residential services.We’re dedicated to a better Marin, and work to promote recycling and diverting waste from our landfills in order to reach our goal of zero waste.
