About

Improving workplace safety since 1993

Daryn Lewellyn founded Lewellyn Technology more than two decades ago to focus specifically on electrical safety training for maintenance workers. As a former maintenance worker himself, Daryn saw the opportunity to fill a need in the industry by starting a company offering practical training taught by experienced instructors.

In the past twenty years, Lewellyn Technology has grown into an industry leader in Arc Flash and Combustible Dust safety, offering a wide range of services, from assessments and consulting, to engineering and training. While our team of in-house, industry experts has grown since our founding, what hasn't changed is the practical, thorough, and company-wide commitment to workplace safety, whether our team is teaching a introductory course or examining a multi-building facility. That's just how we're wired.

Resources

Sometimes, you need a guide to the changing world of electrical safety – from updates on OSHA standards, new rules and regulations, arc flash and combustible dust case studies, to reminders of workplace best practices that have your safety in mind. From up-to-date articles and industry news, to our educational, informative video series, let our team of experts help keep you in control of your safety

Combustible dust has lurked as a hidden danger in industrial facilities for years. Created during the normal course of production at factories, most dust seems like nothing more than a simple housekeeping nuisance – waste that collects on floors and equipment.

However, they pose a serious threat to worker safety. This threat has been made evident in recent years – a series of tragic explosions (through an arc flash, spark, open flame, or other ignition source) have prompted government regulatory agencies to respond sternly. Now, industrial, manufacturing, and other facilities are being pushed to respond as well.

OSHA is demanding action by actively inspecting facilities, issuing citations and fines, and is in the process of creating a firm regulatory standard for the proper handling of combustible dusts. As a leader in proactive workplace safety, Lewellyn Technology provides a thorough combustible dust safety program, from auditing and analysis to employee training.

Our Approach

Lewellyn Technology is first and foremost a safety company – and that approach informs all of our work with combustible dust. We don't leave your safety to just anyone. Instead, our own industry experts identify the risks associated with your dust, and develop customized, comprehensive dust management procedures to reduce the risks associated with combustible dust and comply with industry standards.

Our experts are uniquely qualified to identify and resolve the complex and sometimes costly controls associated with combustible dust. Our perspective combines a deep understanding of combustible dust standards with practical experience in corporate settings. And, our team has OSHA experience and has been instrumental in improving safety at some of the most well known combustible dust events across America.

It's Your Responsibility

The owner/operator of a facility with potentially combustible dust shall be responsible for determining the combustibility or explosibility hazards of materials, identifying and assessing any fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards and managing the identified fire, flash fire, and explosion hazards in accordance NFPA Standards and then communicating the hazards to affected personnel.

Are you doing all of these things? Lewellyn Technology’s dust team is prepared to guide and assist you with every aspect of the combustible dust journey.

Arc Flash Services

An Arc Flash is an explosive release of energy caused by an electrical arc due to either a phase to ground or phase to phase fault. This fault can be caused by many different incidents, including accidental contact with electrical systems, build up of conductive dust, corrosion, dropped tools, and improper work procedures. An arc flash can produce some of the hottest temperatures known to occur on earth – up to 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In comparison, the surface of the sun is only 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not surprisingly, the risk of serious and fatal injury from these incidents is severe. OSHA requires employers to protect employees from electrical hazards, including arc flash. Yet OSHA does not specifically explain how to comply with these regulations. NFPA 70E is the bridge between OSHA regulations and compliance. It is the consensus standard for electrical safety in the workplace, referred to by OSHA on numerous occasions.

Can you be cited for failing to comply with NFPA 70E? In short, yes. As a leader in NFPA 70E compliance and Arc Flash Risk Assessments (also known as: Arc Flash Hazard Analysis, Incident Energy Analysis, Arc Flash Hazard Assessment, or Arc Flash Study), Lewellyn can provide you with a comprehensive, customized safety solution for your facility.
