COMPANY OVERVIEW
Lamp Recycling Solutions is a Denver-based company offering businesses a simple, cost-effective way to recycle fluorescent lamps, HIDs, ballasts, etc. – any mercury-containing lighting waste. The industry commonly uses the term lamps to refer to all types of light bulbs.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) along with other fluorescent lighting such as linear and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps all contain small amounts of mercury. This is the element that achieves the energy savings. While these allow businesses to cut their lighting energy usage and reduce energy costs, it is environmentally important that any product containing mercury be properly managed when it becomes waste. This also protects public health.
A fluorescent bulb recycling program will impact the average property’s overall operating expense budget by less than one-tenth of one percent, plus you can rest assured that mercury which is present in all fluorescent and HID bulbs will not pollute the environment.
We provide fast, reliable service to fit your needs, including conveniently scheduled pick-ups at your facility, containers for your on-site storage, drop off at our facility or an easy to use mail-in system. We issue an invoice to document compliance with all federal and state EPA regulations. Our goal is to increase the fluorescent lamp recycling rate in the greater Denver, front-range area.
Flourescent Lamp Recycle Benefit
When fluorescent lamps are properly handled through recycling, the mercury and all other components of the lamp can be reclaimed and reused. The risk to the environment, to you and to your employees is greatly reduced along with the liability to your business. When you recycle fluorescent lamps, you are following federal and state regulations.
Mercury is a naturally occurring chemical element that is pervasive in our environment. It occurs in deposits throughout the world and is toxic in every form. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is charged with regulating and managing the generation, handling, treatment, and disposal of mercury as a hazardous waste. Several laws give the EPA this authority. Most states, including Colorado, have additional regulations relating to the disposal of any mercury-containing device. (Lamp Disposal and Recycling Regulations.)
The United States Clean Air Act, passed in 1990, put mercury on a list of toxic pollutants that need to be controlled to the greatest possible extent. Ever-increasing human health and environmental concerns, liability issues associated with hazardous waste removal and treatment, and efforts to prevent mercury-containing waste from being sent to landfills, show the importance of recycling mercury-containing products. Businesses are being held responsible for their waste that has been determined to be hazardous and is later found in landfills. They can be subject to retroactive clean-up costs under EPA regulations and can face fines up to $250,000 per occurrence.
Mercury is a necessary component in the production of fluorescent lamps and mercury-vapor lamps. Electricity passes through the mercury vapor in a phosphor-containing glass tube to produce short-wave ultraviolet light which then causes the phosphor to fluoresce, making visible light.
Because mercury and most of its compounds are extremely toxic, it must be handled very carefully. Unbroken lamps are safe to handle and use and are much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. However, in case of spills involving mercury (such as from a broken fluorescent light bulb) specific cleaning procedures should be used to avoid toxic exposure to workers who handle these materials. Mercury vapor can be inhaled and absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes. Elevated airborne levels of mercury exist in the vicinity of recently broken lamps. When lamps are thrown into a dumpster, breakage en route to or upon arrival at a landfill can release mercury into the environment where it eventually enters the water supply and then moves up the food chain. One teaspoon of mercury can contaminate a 20-acre lake forever.
