The Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation (LLRRWMC) was formed in 2004 as a partnership among the Town of La Ronge, the Northern Village of Air Ronge, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (serving Indian Reserves 156, 156B and 156C) and the Ministry of Government Relations on behalf of Northern Saskatchewan Administration District (NSAD).
Saskatchewan Ministry of Parks, Recreation and Culture pays an annual user fee to the Corporation to accommodate the use of LLRRWMC facilities by campgrounds and cottages located within the service area. The La Ronge Recycle Depot is also operated under the LLRRWMC by the same General Manager and Board of Directors.
The La Ronge landfill site has been operational since 1963. In 2004 the LLRRWMC assumed responsibility for the operation and permitting of the landfill located at approximate Latitude 55-02-55 and Longitude 105-19-26. In 2018 the design work for the engineered landfill cell and related infrastructure began. 2021 was a transition year for the LLRRWMC landfill with the newly developed waste cell, gatehouse, and scale officially open for use in July, as well as the relocated access road 5 km south of Air Ronge off Highway 2. The landfill is permitted by Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment (MOE) under the Permit # PO24-052 and MOE letter dated April 25, 2024 (PTO expiration date of May 1st, 2029).
Part of the overall redevelopment project included expanding the membership in the corporation who collectively pay an annual membership for the Operation and Maintenance of the LLRRWMC operations. The LLRRWMC regional area stretches from Timber Bay to North of Southend. In November 2022, the communities of Brabant Lake, Missinipe, Weyakwin and Timber Bay officially joined the corporation as members represented by NSAD. In June of 2023, Ramsey Bay was also added as a member of the corporation, and for 2024 we expect the addition of Grandmothers Bay. The community of Southend continues to pay monthly for use of the La Ronge Landfill since hauling started in December 2022. In July 2023 the LLRRWMC took over the hauling contract and work directly with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation. LLRRWMC expects the communities of Southend and Stanley Mission to join as members in 2025.
