Jim Newell's Iron and Metal of Modesto works with customers (both industrial and individual) who are interested in recycling their scrap metal. Jim Newell buys both ferrous (iron) as well as non-ferrous (copper, aluminum, stainless steel), metals, with a commitment to making the experience as easy as possible, and the bottom line being all about recycling. Newell has worked in the scrap metal business for over 30 years, and for most of that time has focused exclusively on industrial accounts. Factories, food processing plants, wineries, and farms often go through seasonal retooling and refurbishment. This leaves companies with huge amounts of scrap metal to recycle.
Several years ago, Newell began buying scrap from the general public as well as from businesses. He recounts, "One day a woman came into my yard with a pickup truck filled with scrap and asked if I was buying material. I have a scale here, so I said yes. From that day forward, Newell has been open to the public, and he says, "A huge amount of my business is from referrals, and people come from all over the Central Valley because they know I offer top dollar and make the process go smoothly." Recyclable scrap metal can be anything from aluminum siding, scrap iron, engines, transmissions, radiators, window frames, and other common items to spare metals or copper wiring that contractors (such as electricians and plumbers) bring to sell. "Of course, the price is always fluctuating on all the metals." Newell says, "I check prices everyday so I can give my customers the best price for their scrap, wether it's copper, aluminum, brass, or steel
Newell will also deliver roll-off bins to worksites where larger amounts of scrap need collection. In cases of huge amounts of scrap, or when the scrap needs organizing, Newell regularly helps customers by connecting them with the work crews who know the best way to get the scrap metal recycled. A longtime Modesto resident, Newell is also known in the area for playing drums in numerous local rock bands such as Masquerade, Fury, Chronic, Larger Than Life (a KISS tribute band), and, most recently, Wisdom, a tribute to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. As he put it, "I guess you could say I'm into heavy metal!"
