HISTORY

It all started with a clamp

Times were different. The automobile had only recently been invented, the last
German emperor had just ascended his throne when a new era was heralded in Kaiserslautern. After a central water supply and sewer system had already been implemented, the city introduced the removal of household waste and compulsory street cleaning in 1898. The two haulage contractors and economists Jakob Becker and Ludwig Horneff were men from the very beginning. After weeks of negotiations with the city of Kaiserslautern, they received the order under the company name Horneff & Becker to remove the waste and sewage in the eastern part of the city. The company was born.

Two-in-hand cars with a shutter-like lid opening on the rear front took over the household waste collection, a pair of oxen was responsible for the removal of the faeces. But automobiles were also used before the First World War. These performed a double function as a spray truck and latrine car.

The two brothers-in-law were later awarded the honorary title of a royal Bavarian economic council by the then Palatinate district government "in recognition of their tireless work in special orders from the city administration". Becker's twin sons Jakob and Willi soon succeeded them.
