History

A life of garbage

When the 20th century began, garbage collectors had been running in Barcelona for years. His work goes back to the farmers and ranchers who lived in the fields and farms around the city. They were people who passed by their cart through a neighborhood every day and collected the leftovers that people kept under the sink, to feed the cattle and collect manure from the fields. They were, of course, much cleaner and more organic waste than they are today, where everything could be taken advantage of. Even then, the Mata Nebot family (founder of the company) was part of these former garbage collectors.

The first choices

At that time, without being a group, the garbage collectors of Barcelona are already organized minimally so as not to step on each other's collection areas or demarcations. They also share seats, equipment or day laborers that help them in the choice.

Cooperativization

In the 1930s, garbage collectors, inspired by new forms of work, less familiar or mandatory, found in cooperativization the best way to negotiate sales and maximize resources. The Cooperativa d'Usuaris of the Barcelona Public Home Cleaning Service (CLD) was born on September 29, 1930, with the Mata Nebot family among its founders.
