I'm Randy Harmon owner and creator of Ironman's Shop. My background in the metal industry started in 1972. One of my first jobs was in a structural steel fabrication shop building skyscrapers and large commercial projects.
Traveling in the construction industry, I starting out as a steel erector. I advanced to pipe fitting and welding, tank building, boiler making, and glazier welding on high-rise projects. After leaving construction, I began a new career in sales and became sales manager of one of the largest steel brokerage firms in the U.S. There I re-entered college studying metallurgy and work related programs.
I have always wanted to build and design my own projects, so I started my own fabrication business in 1992. Looking to increase durability in the coatings end, I opened Carolina Powder Coaters in 1994. Testing and researching for the best type of applications and procedures began and continue today. Advancement in products and raw materials has made powdercoating one of the most recognized and accepted coatings for durability in the coating industry. Powdercoating is a green product and one of the safest and enviromentally friendly coating products on the market today. Our licensed applicators have to pass testing from outside sources for preparation, pretreatment, application, cure, adhesion, and thickness. New polymers like fluoropolymers and fluorocarbons can only be applied for warranty applications by licensed coaters.
Aluminum has always been my material of choice. The strength of aircraft quality aluminum is very close to that of steel. It also provides a perfect coating surface that resists oxidation and coating breakdown. Like advancements in the coatings, aluminum has also become one of the most recognized and accepted metals for durability in the metal industry. New alloys add strength and durability to a product that was once concieved as "soft" or "weak". Aluminum has great properties for flexibilty and memory as well as strength and hardness. There is no better choice for building a product that is maintance free.
Our graphics department was added in 2010 to include CNC burning. It's mananged by Jamie von Herndon, an art studio graduate from USC and a 10 year member of the famous Philip Simmons Artist Blacksmith Guild of Charleston, South Carolina. Keeping design and artwork in-house gives our customers the hands on care and the one-on-one experience in designing their dream project. My Goal is to provide our clients the best possible product available.
