History

IKG® is known as a pioneer in the global grating industry, having applied the first use of steel mesh grating to the New York Subway System.

As the top bar grating innovators in the 20th century, Irving Subway Grating Company, Kerrigan Iron Works Company, Gary Grating Company, and Borden Metal paved the way for modern use of bar grating. All three companies ultimately joined forces to become the IKG powerhouse that is known today.

IKG proudly holds an extensive list of historic accomplishments along with many “firsts” in the grating industry. “Firsts” including creating the first railroad tops with open mesh, the first open mesh decking for bridges (for the University bridge in Seattle, WA), and engineering the first portable landing mats to be accepted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
