We are a service led business driven by our passion to divert ever increasing textiles from landfill through recycling and reuse. We offer a comprehensive range of textile banks and kerbside collection services providing recycling and fundraising opportunities to our partners. We offer bespoke products to markets within the UK, as well as for export into Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia.
i + g cohen ltd has evolved and adapted to an ever changing environment which has been recognised with a series of awards including the UK’s most prestigious business accolade the Queen’s Award for Enterprise (International Trade) This was followed by EN Magazine's Family Business of the Year Award and the International Trade Award from Salford Business.
The company continued to grow throughout the 1960s and 70s. Gerald’s son Elliot Cohen joined in 1975 which was a great source of pride for the family with three generations working together. We experienced some tough times during the recession in the 1980s, but a move to our current location of Bazaar Street in Salford and exporting goods for the first time to Togo in West Africa allowed the business to survive.
The 1990s saw new export markets established in African countries and we also started to export to Eastern Europe. In 1993, i + g cohen’s first textile bank was placed in the newly opened Meadow hall shopping centre in Sheffield.
The new millennium saw the beginning of a long period of innovation and diversification including the introduction of “Giant Bales” and pioneering new methods of collecting clothes, namely kerbside collections. We launched our professional fundraising arm care2collect in 2005 raising money for charity partners who now include National Blind Children’s Society, Action for Children, WCRF and The Christie Charitable Fund.
i + g cohen received the much coveted Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category in 2008 which coincided with our 50th birthday celebrations. Now employing over fifty people, we are now exporting to new markets including Pakistan and India and working with local authorities, waste management companies and charities on exploring innovative ways to divert hundreds of tonnes of used clothing and textiles from landfill every week.
