Household Goods provides a full range of donated furniture and household items, free of charge, to help people in need make a home.Household Goods Inc., an independent 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, began out of the garage of Ira and Barbara Smith in 1990 when they helped a refugee from El Salvador who had arrived in the US with nothing. A call to neighbors and friends yielded enough material to furnish an apartment with goods left over. By matching the great need for household items with the generosity of the surrounding communities, Household Goods has grown to an organization that has served many thousands of individuals and families since its inception. From the Smiths’ garage, Household Goods moved to a church basement and then in 2004 to its current facility at 530 Main Street in Acton.In 2014, 650 volunteers walked through the doors of Household Goods donating 38,000 hours! Our volunteers work with 321 social service agencies to help 2,500 families rebuild their homes and start their lives over.The people served by Household Goods have at least one thing in common — they need help during a difficult time. In 2014, our clients came from 140 communities in eastern Massachusetts with the top ten clients from Boston, Lowell, Fitchburg, Worcester, Framingham, Acton, Leominster, Lawrence, Maynard & Lynn.Our clients are individuals and families in transition who need help to rebuild their lives. They include:victims of fires or floods,women and children escaping abusive domestic situations,people coming out of shelters or halfway houses,war veterans,refugees and recent immigrants to the U.S.Household Goods provides a full range of donated furniture and household items, free of charge, to help people in need make a home. We accept donations of gently used household items. As a volunteer based organization, we depend on the generosity of community members for goods, time and financial support.
