Claude Gobin began his career in the reinforcing steel business in 1950. He worked for several companies and ran many major projects throughout British Columbia. In 1970 he formed Heritage Steel Ltd, a rebar installation (placing) company. Claude was well known and liked by many customers and as a result this company contracted many small and medium sized projects throughout the lower mainland. In 1983 he invited his son Martin into the business and it was at this time they realized there was a niche to be filled in the fabrication side of the industry. After setting up a small fabrication facility in the back yard of their home they quickly realized they could fill that niche. It didn’t take long for the new Heritage Steel Sales Ltd. to outgrow the backyard so they moved to an industrial area in Port Kells. With only one shear-line, a bender, forklift and a mobile crane, Heritage Steel Sales Ltd was starting its journey to becoming one of the premier fabrication facilities in the lower mainland.

During the following years, Claude and Martin focused on producing quality, accurate products and providing the highest level of service available. Along the way, they began accumulating key personnel, many of which are still with the company. With the customer base growing rapidly, HSSL moved again to a new 8000 sq. ft plant and purchased new updated equipment. This added efficiencies that brought even more value to the ever-growing base of customers.

In 2000, Claude retired and the business continued under Martin. In keeping a family run business atmosphere, Heritage Steel Sales Ltd. continued to flourish, and in 2008 Martin and his staff undertook a large expansion after the purchase of an adjacent piece of property. The new 24,500 sq ft enclosed plant now houses shear-lines (one of which has the largest production made shears in the world), a conveyor system to transport material from the shear to the table benders, two stirrup/auto coil machines, radius machine, and a spiral machine. Above are four wirelessly controlled 5 ton overhead cranes. To aid in service, HSSL owns their own trucks, tandem, tridem, and super-B trailers. This efficient, state of the art fabrication facility has enabled Heritage Steel Sales Ltd. to fabricate material for a wide variety of projects both large and small while still maintaining its quality and service.

Since the beginning, the safety of employees has been the highest priority to Heritage Steel Sales Ltd. The new plant is not only efficient, it is also designed to create an extremely safe work environment for all employees.  The equipment is maintained regularly, guarded, and all safety stops are in place. All employees are trained correctly on the safe use of equipment. Safety policy and procedures are established and maintained and safety meetings are held regularly. With awards from the CRSI for safety and an extremely low accident rate, HSSL is known as ‘the’ place to be for safe and stable employment.

With this expansion, Heritage Steel Sales Ltd. is leading the industry in technology. Computer software is designed specifically for reinforcing steel products. The largest shear-line is computer aided and automated and the benders and stirrup machines are also computer aided. WiFi scanners allow real-time tracking, mill/heat assignments to releases, inventory functions, loading/shipping functions, and auto setting of the shear-line and benders. These advancements are proven to provide even higher quality and more efficient fabrication. The sole purpose of this technology is to improve even more on quality and service, bringing even more added value to customers.
