Your "Local Choice" for OVER 60 YEARS, we've been serving the area's waste and recycling needs since 1952. Though we are now the area's oldest and largest independent hauler, we still give our customers the flexible service you want - along with the personal touch you deserve!

We provide residential and commercial service to the communities of Proctor, Hermantown, Duluth, Solway, Midway, Rice Lake, Pequaywan, North Star, Normanna, Lakewood, Gnesen, Fredenberg, Duluth Townships, and areas surrounding Caribou; Island; and Pike Lakes.

In addition, we provide home dumpster and roll-off service in Cotton, Cloquet, Duluth area, Fish Lake, Floodwood, Island Lake, Moose Lake, the North Shore, Pequaywan Lake, Superior, WI & surrounding communities south to Solon Springs, Two Harbors. We also provide commercial service as well as residential recycling in Superior.

Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal has proudly served your neighborhood for OVER 60 years!

In 1952, Leo Hartel started his independent business, Duluth and Proctor Garbage Service. He operated with the principles of quality service and personal integrity. Leo continued to serve the community until 1985, when his son, Dan Hartel, and nephew, Jeff Walstrom, purchased the company. In 1995, Hartel’s merged with Darrell B. Johnson’s DBJ Disposal Company, which has served the Duluth area since 1979. It soon after became known as Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal Companies.

Four name changes and over a half century later, Hartel’s / DBJ Disposal is the largest locally owned disposal company in NE Minnesota. While much has changed in the industry and region, the company has rolled forward with new equipment while retaining its old fashioned values of customer service and community involvement.
