Global Weather Corporation® (GWC) is an information company with proprietary technology that produces real-time precision weather forecasts needed by businesses to improve decision-making, increase operational efficiency, and serve their business/consumer customers. GWC’s forecasts are tuned on-demand to any specific location or geography in the world and delivered through a scalable transaction-based web services model. We serve a growing business and consumer market demand – improved accuracy at exact locations with better timeliness than anyone else.
Accomplishing this is made possible by commercializing one of the world’s most effective core weather forecasting technologies, developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). NCAR is a Federally Funded Research & Development Center (FFRDC) funded primarily through a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). It is operated by the University Corporation for National Research (UCAR), a consortium of universities. Intellectual property and commercialization of NCAR technology is accomplished through the UCAR Foundation (UCARF), a non-profit organization chartered by UCAR. In 2003, UCARF formed a startup incubation company Peak Weather Resources that has spun off two companies, Advanced Radar Corporation (2007) and GWC (2009). Both are partly owned by UCARF.
Technology
GWC’s vision is to leverage technology to increase the global availability of precision weather forecasts while substantially reducing the cost. Our ability to accomplish this builds from DICast weather forecast technology developed by NCAR over the last decade. DICast® is the Dynamic Integrated foreCast system, an NCAR-developed weather forecast software package. It ingests a variety of weather models, statistical data, and observations and produces a point-based weather forecast. The sophisticated algorithms it contains are the basis for the value provided by GWC. LOGICast® is a new gridded version of DICast developed at NCAR; it is used by GWC to power its regional and on-demand services. Both can be customized to provide by-customer proprietary forecasts using additional sensor data and/or numerical forecast models.
Mark Flolid (CEO, founder) co-founded and successfully led SignalSoft Corp. to an IPO in 2001 and was SVP of Marketing and Sales for SCC Inc. (now Intrado) which had a successful IPO in 1998. Mark holds a MS in Economics from The University of Texas.
Bill Gail (CTO, founder) is past president of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and has worked for over two decades in the fields of meteorology services, satellite meteorology (Ball Aerospace), and location-aware software (Microsoft). Bill holds a PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford. He recently served on the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) research council committee reviewing the National Weather Service modernization program and has served on a number of other NAS committees.
Bill Myers (CSO, founder) is a former NCAR scientist and the primary developer of DICast. He has developed forecasting capabilities in areas such as the weather forecast engine for the Weather Channel, road weather, agriculture, and most recently wind energy for Xcel Energy. He has a MS in Mathematics from Dartmouth and a PhD in Computer Science from University of Colorado.
Jim Maury (CRO, founder) has over two decades of experience in software-centric solutions. He has pioneered and developed advanced decision support applications, location aware communication infrastructure and custom A/V solutions for DoD, NASA, Internet Providers and Telephony markets. He holds a BA in Economics from California State University Long Beach, and accreditations from Carnegie Melon.
Global Weather Corp. offers the most accurate, geographically precise weather forecast data services available anywhere. Applications include industrial utilities (such as wind power forecasting), transportation logistics (including road, rail and airline operations) and digital media enhancement (such as website commerce and publishing integration).
Our proprietary forecast engines generate location-specific, hyper-local live weather data delivered from our National Operations Center near Denver, Colo.
