About Company

Futurepast offers services in three areas: management systems improvement and implementation; safety management systems for the aviation industry; and carbon accounting services for organizations seeking to quantify and reduce carbon emissions in their operations and products. We deliver our services through consulting, training and auditing.

Futurepast believes that consultants should not only “talk the talk” but also “walk the talk.” We maintain a quality management system for the provision of services. And we quantified and reported our own greenhouse gas emissions to The Climate Registry for six years from 2008 through 2013.

Futurepast and its personnel are engaged as corporate or individual members of the following organizations:

  • Airports Council International – North America
  • American Association of Airport Executives
  • American Bar Association: Section on Environment, Energy and Natural Resources; Forum Committee on Air and Space Law

Futurepast is headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. A second office is located in Spokane, Washington. We serve customers in the United States and around the world.

Upgrading Your Airport’s Safety Management System to FAA/ICAO Specifications

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration intends to require US airports holding Part 139 certificates to upgrade their Safety Management Systems to FAA/ICAO specifications. Proposed requirements were detailed in June 2012 in a notice of proposed rulemaking and in draft Advisory Circular AC 150/5200-37A. The regulation, expected to become final in 2015, may apply to Class I, II, III and IV airports. Airlines became subject to similar requirements in January 2015.

The goal of the regulation is to supplement compliance-based safety management with a proactive approach to hazard identification and safety risk management. Airports and their tenants and customers will benefit from an organizationwide approach to safety management. Such an approach empowers personnel to report situations that may constitute a threat to safe operations and to process information systematically, with the goal of preventing errors and accidents rather than reacting to them.

Safety management systems are based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act principles of internationally recognized environmental and occupational health and safety management systems. An SMS may be designed as a stand-alone management system or integrated with the aviation industry member’s existing operational or environmental management system.

Futurepast assists airports and airlines with the upgrading of their Safety Management Systems to meet the requirements of proposed federal regulations. We work closely with airport managers to ensure that the SMS you design and implement is compatible with your management culture and integrates seamlessly with your existing management systems.

Based on your requirements, Futurepast consultants will help you establish the SMS as a stand-alone system or one that integrates with your other management system practices and procedures. We will also assist you with the upgrading and streamlining of existing management system practices and the selection and implementation of software solutions, if desired.

Futurepast consultants have years of aviation and management system experience. We are associate members of Airports Council International-North America and corporate members of the American Association of Airport Executives. Our consultants serve you from offices in Arlington, VA, and Spokane, WA.

Enhancing the Effectiveness of Your Organization’s Management System

All organizations have management systems, whether they are ISO 9001/ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 certified or not. Some are truly integrated, and easily adapt to new needs, such as carbon counting and environmental and safety management. Others have been implemented in a more piecemeal fashion as management recognized the benefit of Plan-Do-Check-Act approaches to various organizational functions.
Regardless of whether your organization’s management system has been consciously integrated or remains “siloed”, integrating the processes needed to manage environment, safety and health can simplify the task. This integration effort can be approached as a management system improvement initiative.
When upgrading your management system, Futurepast recommends considering the requirements of the following ISO standards:
Information security (ISO 27001)
Supply chain security management (ISO 28001)
Risk management (ISO 31000)
Energy efficiency (ISO 50001).
Top management should be well aware of the benefits of improving management system performance. Better process efficiency, enhanced compliance assurance, improved communication internally and externally, higher quality, and greater customer satisfaction are examples of just a few possible benefits.
Futurepast has extensive experience helping organizations improve and integrate their management systems.
For organizations new to formalized management systems, Futurepast offers consulting, training and auditing in the following specialized areas:
Environmental management systems (ISO 14001)
Responsible Care management systems (RCMS, RC14001)
Occupational health and safety management systems (OHSAS 18001)
Aviation safety management systems (meeting ICAO and FAA guidelines)

Futurepast: Inc. helps organizations manage change. We offer four categories of service:

  • Consulting to management on strategic planning, risk management, succession planning and marketing and sales,

  • Helping organizations improve or implement a quality, environmental or safety management system, or integrate environment, safety and health into existing management systems, and
  • Managing sustainably, including planning, greenhouse gas quantification, regulatory compliance, and verification.

Airport Safety Management Systems

Implement an FAA-Compliant SMS. Futurepast helps organizations create an implementation plan and implement a Safety Management System that meets organizational needs and satisfies FAA regulatory requirements. We work collaboratively with your management team and on-site professionals to ensure that the management system enhances your safety risk management practices and is fully integrated with existing (or improved) business practices at your FAA Part 139 airport (Class I, II, III or IV).

EHS Management

Consulting. Futurepast helps organizations implement and maintain environmental management systems, Responsible Care management systems in the chemical and transportation industries, and integrated health-safety-environmental management systems in other industries. For organizations with mature management systems, Futurepast assists organizations to streamline and improve their processes, manage data and information, and integrate systems.

Training.
Futurepast offers on-site training for management systems internal auditors and greenhouse gas verifiers, and for personnel responsible for implementing and maintaining management systems.

Auditing. Futurepast enables organizations to outsource internal (first-party) management system auditing in the areas of environment, safety and health, and greenhouse gas management. Futurepast auditors also perform supplier (second-party) audits of an organization’s customers and suppliers.

Counting Carbon

Futurepast “counts carbon” in a number of ways.

Greenhouse Gas Consulting. Futurepast assists organization to identify and address strategic issues related to climate change, including direct and indirect impacts from the effects of climate change, regulatory risks, changes in consumer preferences, and reputational risk. We also assist organizations to decide what to disclose and how to disclose greenhouse gas information. With increased consumer interest in greenhouse gas information and climate change mitigation, companies increasingly are asked to quantify greenhouse gas emissions applicable to particular products or services.

Greenhouse Gas Accounting. Futurepast assists organizations with internal and external reporting of greenhouse gas information for inventories and projects, and for calculating a “carbon footprint” of products that can meet legal requirements for an “environmental claim.” Futurepast helps organizations comply with greenhouse gas regulations at both the state and federal levels, as well as with the accounting of information intended for voluntary disclosure.

Greenhouse Gas Verification. Futurepast provides greenhouse gas verification services to satisfy an organization’s requirements for internal auditing of the greenhouse gas information and information systems. Our services are also available to organizations that wish to verify the greenhouse emissions information and management systems of their supply chain.
