When Clifford Alexander Fielding started hauling sand and gravel to mining and construction companies in 1935 from his family’s farm, it was by horse and wagon. Born in Waters Township and raised alongside eight siblings in the mining town of Copper Cliff, Ont., Clifford Fielding left Grade 8 to help provide for his family. At 18 he began working as a car and locomotive repairman at Inco Ltd. and then, two years later, with one red truck and a loan from his father and friend, he started C.A. Fielding Limited.
Over the next few decades, Clifford Fielding expanded his business to include the manufacturing of ready-mix concrete, bulk cement mixing and aggregate products to serve clients in the industrial and commercial sectors across northern Ontario. Fascinated by the ingenuity of modern technology, Clifford Fielding always looked at opportunities to incorporate the latest advancements in the industry. He constructed an on-site underground ready-mix plant and a railway line to service clients directly from Sudbury. Fisher Wavy cement products have contributed to the formation of many buildings and iconic structures in Northeastern Ontario including the towering Superstack in Sudbury and Fisher Harbour on Great Cloche Island, one of the deepest harbours on the Great Lakes today. Tenacity was one of Clifford Fielding’s greatest strengths, and it extended beyond his business. As an amateur boxer, he was named to the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame.
In 2005, two entities founded by Clifford Fielding, Wavy Industries Ltd. and Fisher Construction Ltd., amalgamated to form Fisher Wavy Inc. The company name is a nod both to the businessman and avid outdoor enthusiast, and the company’s dedication to the environment.
Fisher is a small mammal found throughout Northern Ontario and Wavy is named after Wavy Lake, an angler’s paradise located near Clifford’s birthplace, Waters Township.
Fisher Wavy has a long tradition in environmental action. In 1970 Clifford Fielding planted more than one million trees on his company property. Environmental responsibility has made Fisher Wavy a proud community partner. Clifford Fielding’s high standards and unwavering commitment to producing a quality product and providing genuine customer service have all become synonymous with the Fisher Wavy name. Despite economic downturns and the evolution of the commercial and industrial sectors, we have consistently delivered on our quality and service promises.
