History :
Fairmount Foundry was founded in 1907 by two men, George Benkert, a foundryman, and Dan Redman, a financial backer. The business was started in a garage in Philadelphia, and by 1925, the company had grown to the point where it occupied the Olney Foundry in Philadelphia employing 200 men making iron castings as large as 40,000 lbs. As time went on, the Olney Foundry was sold and two smaller foundries were purchased. One in Philadelphia to make castings 50 lbs. to 50,000 lbs., and one in Hamburg, PA to make smaller castings under 50 lbs.
In the early 1960's, a labor problem, combined with a shrinking market, forced the closing of the foundry in Philadelphia, leaving the operating foundry in Hamburg.
Today, the foundry is producing Grey Iron castings ranging from under 1 lb. to 14,000 lbs., Ductile Iron to 4,000 lbs., White Iron, Ni-Resist/Ni-Hard Iron, and alloy iron ranging in size from under lIb. to 8,000 lbs., and aluminum up to 500 lbs. The current foundry ownership represents continuity for five generations.
