Ewart Engineering was established in 1968 by Ian and Jim Ewart. Both from engineering backgrounds – working in the Merchant Navy and as an electrical engineer respectively – the brothers formed the business to initially provide shut-down maintenance work for companies.

The company operated from a blacksmiths shop in Eastriggs, providing local companies with light engineering services. Quickly outgrowing these premises, Ewart Engineering expanded to its current base in Gretna in the mid 1970s, building their own factories to meet growing nationwide demand for their services – although the anvil from the original shop still remains (and is still used: as a initiation for new apprentices, they are challenged to lift the anvil!) as a reminder of these early days.

A breakthrough came in 1978, when Ewart Engineering won the contract to supply Leyland Bus, at Lillyhall. When Volvo acquired Leyland Bus in 1988, Ewart Engineering was propelled into the global market, winning contracts with JCB and Transbus over the following decade.

In the early 1990s, Ian and Jim handed over the reins of the company to their respective sons & daughters Brian, Angela and Colin, Karen before finally taking their well earned retirement in 2011.

To this day Ewart Engineering remains a family-run business, alongside a highly skilled loyal workforce consisting of over 70 staff, supplying a global market from our base at Gretna.

Each plant operates ISO 9002/2000 quality control procedures ensuring that our customer’s products are manufactured to the highest standards and they have the confidence and reassurance that our customer service reaches equally high standards.

The company operates state of the art software for control of scheduling, MRP planning and customer accounts. We also operate specialist software to enable our customers interface their schedules with our own systems and have the flexibility to work with different customer systems.
