About Company

ECS is a mechanical, electrical and software engineering firm dedicated to the composting industry. We design and manufacture In-vessel and Aerated Static Pile (ASP) compost systems, and provide a wide range of technical services, process components, and system configurations.

ECS compost systems control odors and VOC emissions; comply with stringent health and environmental regulations; and conserve electrical power. ECS systems are designed for composting a broad range of organic feedstocks.

ECS helps facility owners/operators achieve their compost process goals with stand alone systems, key products, and technical services. We are a good match for clients that require professional services and systems for:

  • Upgrading existing compost facilities
  • Planning/Building new compost facilities
  • Handling specialty wastes such as biosolids and other industrial wastes

AERATED SYSTEMS

Every compost facility has a unique micro-climate, proximity to neighbors, size, feedstocks, and financial constraints (to name just a few). We believe that there is no single system, mixer or cover that is so perfect it works in every application. Rather, we believe that each facility requires a customized design and an appropriate technological solution to achieve its process, market and financial goals.

In order to address our customers’ unique needs, ECS has developed a Tool-Kit of Aerated Pile and In-Vessel Systems and system components. Our Tool-Kit approach allows us to choose from a broad range of reliable and robust ECS Systems and Components to best address the facility’s needs.

Below are examples of four ECS Aerated Composting Systems. All ECS systems feature automated aeration control, data monitoring and biofiltration for controlling odors and VOC & GHG emissions. Every system is designed for compost applications where meeting stringent environmental and regulatory requirements are paramount to success.

COMPONENTS

ECS has spent decades designing and developing specialized components used in our systems, and working with trusted and experienced vendors and equipment manufacturers to build quality equipment that will stand up to the rigors of life at a compost facility.

SERVICES

Facility Design Consulting

ECS engineers provide complete facility design services that begin with simple facility drawings for initial sales presentations and planning, to final mechanical and electrical submittal drawings. Our services include process design, facility sizing, calculations for air handling requirements, mass/balance analysis, moisture management, odor control, equipment specifications and sizing, and feedstock volume calculations for recipe development.

ECS teams with experienced and trusted General Contractors, Consultants and Equipment Vendors to supply site improvement and buildings, feedstock pre-processing equipment (bag breakers, picking lines, debris roll-screens), and product refining equipment (trommel screens and air classification systems, resulting in a well integrated and complete facility design.

Pro-Forma Facility Analysis

ECS engineers work with our clients to develop or review pro-forma facility analysis (Excel spreadsheet). The analysis is customized to the client's facility and includes capital & financial costs, labor costs, energy cost, operation and maintenance costs and sales generated income.

Equipment Start-Up

ECS engineers are typically on-site during construction to ensure accurate placement of equipment, electrical components and general problem solving. Electrical panels and components are fabricated and QC'ed in our UL certified panel shop. After installation ECS engineers are on-site to calibrate equipment, verify instrumentation and motor rotations, and test overall system response. Following start-up is system performance testing and operating training.

Operator Training

The ECS Operator Training courses are comprehensive and facility operators are encouraged to participate beginning at facility start-up and performance testing. ECS engineers conduct the operator training courses following performance testing. The training course includes Compost Theory and Practice, the biological process of composting, selection of feedstocks and bulking agents, calculating a compost mix, biofilters and odor control, and regulatory compliance. Staff is also trained on the operation of each piece of equipment, maintenance, trouble-shooting and instruction on using the CompTroller PC interface and software. ECS often returns to facilities a year (or so) after the initial training to provide refresher courses, train new staff, or when installing additional equipment.

Technical Support Of Operations

ECS offers a year's worth of technical assistance via phone and dial-up modem along with each system and/or major component purchased. ECS engineers can dial-up the client's CompTroller (PC software that features an easy to use graphical user interface and real-time database and provide technical support on short notice) during regular business hours.

ECS also offers our client facilities an Annual Audit and Equipment Inspection. ECS engineers travel to the client's site to upgrade software, check and recalibrate all sensors and inspect all compost system equipment (down to the bearings). Besides equipment the Annual Audit reviews composting processes, procedures, and feedstock recipes. And, it is an excellent time for facility operators to pick the brains of ECS compost experts and review initial training. ECS generates a detailed report of the findings from the Annual Audit as part of the service.

Non-Client Facility Audit

ECS engineers are available for Non-Client Facility Audits when an independent review of process, procedures, and equipment is wanted from compost industry experts. The Non-Client Facility Audit reviews every aspect of the client's facility and generates a report of findings.
