Ecoplastile Inc was inspired by the founder’s personal story and experience living in a slum community in Kampala as a first time arrival in search for jobs in the city, the only option Franc had was to lent a small room next to a slum community since they seemed cheaper. Franc here witnessed dire consequences of poor waste disposal (Over 51% of the waste generated in Kampala, remain un collected) with post-consumer waste plastic littering everywhere on streets, clogging sewers and even encroaching on poorly built houses during heavy rains. During those days, people would die, loose properties and means no school or even work.

Franc experienced first hand experience of the housing crisis in Kampala (Uganda has a 2.5M housing deficit, growing at 200k units/year) staying in an unfinished house which was almost collapsing. In this place, there were no waste pick up trucks mainly because people can’t afford paying for the available waste pick-up services by private companies. Left with no option, Franc and colleagues would wait late in the night or very early in the morning to go and dump waste in the nearby drainage channels in the neighborhood.

Disappointed by this personal story, Franc realized, he had to do something about it NOW and decided to wage a war on plastic waste and housing crisis in Uganda, Africa and beyond. With the zeal to make a difference, he passionately embarked on a journey to use his skills as an MBA drop out due to tuition to develop and employ innovative solutions in tackling the waste management, housing and environmental crisis facing Uganda. This was inspired by the German experience where their waste industry employed 250,000+ individuals at that time from garbage collectors to scientists, and generating revenues of over 50 billion Euros annually.

After several trials and failing on the different products that could be made out of recycled plastic, from a paving slab, to plastic fence posts, Franc finally settled on Polymer sand roofing tile as Ecoplastile Inc ‘s flagship product in 2021. Ecoplastile is now on a clear path to solve three problems of ; plastic waste pollution, housing crisis and the effects of climate change while creating opportunities for millions of marginalized communities.
