Don's Car Crushing has a long history of serving the state of South Carolina. Founded during WWII by Dewey Brewer as Hemingway Scrap Iron and Metal, Don's Car Crushing has grown into a thriving business with several locations around the state.
What was to become Don's Scrap Iron and Metal began as Hemingway Scrap Iron and Metal. Founder Dewey Brewer established the company by first separating the brass and steel from shell casings and recycling it to be reused as new ammunition. Brewer's dedication paid off and he eventually became one of the largest brass dealers on the East Coast.
Dewey's son, Donnie Brewer, Sr. took over his father's business in 1973 and changed the name from Hemingway Scrap Iron and Metal to Don's Scrap Iron and Metal to reflect the company's family ownership as well as the business' expanding service area.
Donnie Sr. believed that the future of the business would be bolstered by the acquisition of a large automobile shredder (at the time one of only 200 in the US and one of 5 in South Carolina). Since acquiring the shredder in the early 1970s, Don's Car Crushing has evolved into a multi-location business offering a variety of services including auto shredding, metal recycling, demolition, and container services.
The business remains a family one and is currently managed by Donnie's son, Donnie Jr.
