Did you know that 140 million tons of concrete is recycled each year in the United States alone?
Much of our nation's transportation infrastructure now requires significant renovation and replacement. Many Americans are recycling concrete as a supplement to natural aggregates such as crushed stone, sand and gravel.
Concrete recycling is becoming an increasingly popular way to utilize aggregate left behind when structures or roadways are demolished. In the past, this rubble was disposed of in landfills, but with more attention being paid to environmental concerns, concrete recycling allows reuse of the rubble while also keeping construction costs down.
In the past decade both the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) have accepted recycled concrete as a source of aggregate into new concrete and have set the quality standards. These premier specifying agencies are confident that recycled concrete aggregate can be of high quality. Now it is the aggregate producers’ responsibility to produce quality recycled concrete aggregate. At Crushcrete in Bethlehem PA we take that challenge very seriously and strive to deliver such high quality recycled aggregate.
Recycled concrete is an environmentally friendly product, made from demolished structures, construction waste and other sources of broken concrete. It is a cost effective alternative for stone base material. Dense Graded Aggregate (DGA) as it is also known, is very compactable, which makes it ideal for a base material under asphalt, concrete, paving stones, or stone driveways.
Sources of Recycled Concrete
The source of the recycled clean aggregate is mixed and may come from homeowners, contractors and municipality’s bringing in concrete from foundations, curbs and gutters, demolished buildings, sidewalks, patios, concrete pools, roads, highways, airport runways and more.
