About Company

CarbonFree Technology is a leading solar project developer, active across North America.

We can help your organization benefit from a reliable solar power solution, at no upfront capital cost. We would be happy to evaluate the potential for solar power at your facilities – on rooftops, on unused land or on canopies over parking lots.

Ownership Options

We help industrial, commercial and institutional clients choose the best solar solutions and equipment for their own unique needs. From 150 kW to megawatt-plus installations, we work with building owners, energy users and even utilities to specify, design and install systems that leverage the most up-to-date, reliable solar technologies!.

With CarbonFree Technology involved, solar power does not have to be a risky proposition. We have significant, real-world expereience developing many different kinds of photovoltaic systems in many different parts of North America. Our understanding of system performance is based on first-hand experience of systems we have developed ourselves, many of which have now been operational for some time. Our forecasts of system performance are both conservative and realistic.

If your organization wants to own a solar power system, we are happy to help. We can advise you on system design and equipment specification, and help you secure any available incentives.

Alternatively, if you are interested in third-party ownership, we are very familiar with the options available and have the financial, legal, tax and regulatory expertise necessary to structure the optimum transaction. In many cases, it may be possible for your organization to lock in a portion of your electricity bill -- ideally saving money compared to grid electricity rates -- using a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

In jurisdictions wih Feed-In Tariffs, we are eager to determine whether it would be economic for us to rent your roof or ground space in order to host a solar power system, providing your organization with an additional source of long-term rent.

Over the longer term, we also provide state-of-the-art system Monitoring and Maintenance with all CarbonFree installations, so you will always know how much energy the system is generating and the equipment will always be kept in top condition.

Rooftop Systems

CarbonFree Technology has developed or financed approximately 90 commercial-scale rooftop systems across the United States and Canada. Their combined capacity exceeds 25 MW.

The systems are ballasted, attached or elevated - as appropriate - and installed on both flat and sloping roofs. CarbonFree uses components from several best-in-class suppliers, and is not tied to any paricular one.

Each solution has relative advantages, and the choice of which approach is best for your facility will be influenced by the age of the roof, its ability to support additional weight, any expected snow cover and whether or not you would like the system to be visible from street level.

We would be happy to work with your organization to determine which type of solution works best for your rooftops, or to acquire singel completed rooftop PV systems, or porttolios, if they meet our standards.

Project Development

CarbonFree works closely with each client from project concept to commissioning and beyond, ensuring that the process is smooth and runs according to plan. Key project development steps include:

Site Assessment

Prior to engagement, we conduct an on-site assessment of your energy requirements and the potential location options for a solar energy system. We also note any structural, utility-related or other considerations which may affect system design or even the viability of the project.

Preliminary System Recommendation

CarbonFree carefully follows the evolution of solar technologies and maintains working relationships with suppliers offering a range of solar solutions. Based on the site assessment and our knowledge of equipment capabilities and applicable incentives, we recommend one or more suitable types of systems.

Project Modelling

We model the project economics using long-term solar data and expected equipment costs. When appropriate, we also compare the financial impact of our customer purchasing the system versus entering into a contract to purchase only the energy generated, with advice about appropriate project structures and ownership.

System Engineering and Equipment Selection

After being engaged as the project developer, we undertake detailed system engineering to specify exactly how a system will operate and what equipment is needed. We also get up-to-date quotes from alternate suppliers for most of the key components required.

Application for Incentives and Approvals

Once the system design has been finalized, we apply for any available incentives and seek all required approvals from the appropriate municipalities or regulatory bodies.

Why Solar

Some reasons solar energy can be a preferred option include:

Environmental Objectives – Using solar energy is a practical way to reduce carbon emissions and meet commitments to environmental objectives.

Hedging Against Future Price Increases – With almost all costs known in advance, solar energy systems offer excellent protection against future price increases of electricity.

Proven and Durable Technology – Solar energy systems have been commercially available since the 1970s, and represent a proven and well studied energy solution. Most solar energy systems have 20 to 30 year life expectancies, and often carry warranties of up to 20 years on major components.

Low Maintenance – Many photovoltaic systems are solid state, with no moving parts, and thus require little maintenance other than the occasional need to be washed.

LEED® Building Certification – Using solar energy counts toward achieving Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Green Building status

Roof Shading – Installing solar energy systems on building rooftops can provide additional savings up to 5% of building energy from their shading effect alone.
