History
A family business for 45 years
Originally hailing from Coatbridge, Alex Brewster (snr) bought Blackcraig Farm, Dechmont, West Lothian with his newly-wed wife Agnes in 1954. In 1958 they moved to Bonnington Mains Farm, Kirknewton with five children. Twin boys Alex and David had been born at Bangour Hospital in 1954 and in 1975 they officially went into partnership with their father to form Alex Brewster & Sons.
Tragically, Alex (snr) died relatively young at 52 years of age in 1977 and left Agnes and the boys at only 22 to run the farm. To their credit, they did so with relative success and even achieved a listing in the Guiness book of World Records for the highest yield of barley ever grown!
In 1999, the Brewster Brothers sold their farming interest and reinvested the proceeds in property and developed several sites local to Bonnington Mains and further afield. In 2007, Alex's son Scott joined the business to bring a third generation of the Brewster family into the firm. During the decade of 2007-2017, the business redeveloped the redundant Craigpark Quarry near Ratho into a residential scheme and associated country park. The restoration of this quarry, mainly done with excavation waste generated from local construction sites, started the business' journey into waste management services and recycled aggregate production.
In 2017, Brewster Bros. Ltd was incorporated to purchase the shareholding of local haulage contractor Henry Gillies (Contractors) Ltd (now renamed Brewster Brothers Ltd). With this going concern came Drumshoreland Bing, a waste heap of spent oil shale. This site was used to develop the recycling facility, which the business now operates near Livingston. Sadly, David Brewster died in April 2018, before the plant was operational, but the legacy of his seed investment and brief involvement in the new company lives on in the name. His nephew Roger Hastings has also now joined the business along with Scott's wife, Lexi, and brother-in-law, Justin, to continue the family-theme.
