Original Research into Humane Animal Control
More than twenty years ago the founder of Bird Gard, my father, developed and refined a complete line of electronic pest control products for industrial and residential use. His focus was always on extensive research into safe and humane ways to repel nuisance pests while having minimal adverse effects on the environment.
In collaboration with leading universities and agriculture extension agents doing research into animal behavior, a method was discovered of using the highly developed social structure of animals to control their behavior.
Most nuisance birds live in flocks, an interdependent social order where each bird acts as the eyes and ears of the group. When one senses danger or a food source, the information is immediately relayed to the rest of the flock. This explains why we see huge flocks of birds suddenly change direction en masse, as if being directed by an outside force.
Birds are Chicken
With the exception of predatory birds such as eagles, hawks and falcons, most birds are low on the food chain so they are in constant fear of being attacked by predators. The only way they can defend themselves is to fly away from danger. When a bird is attacked or fears an attack is imminent, it makes alarm and distress sounds to warn the rest of the flock, causing them to flee.
At Bird Gard, we harness the power of this innate fear by using high-fidelity digital recordings of the alarm and distress calls of more than 100 of the most common nuisance birds. These species-specific bird danger sounds are carefully matched with the sound of natural predator birds for each species. When exposed to the combination of alarm, distress and predator sounds, the target birds become panicked and will do anything possible to flee from the area. In some cases, electronically-generated harassment sounds are added to the mix to further agitate the birds.
