In 1993, the city of Pécs decided to restructure its company, which dates back more than 100 years, and changed the name of the company to BIOKOM Kft. At that time, the company, which was only dealing with waste transport, had only an uninsulated landfill and an outdated vehicle fleet. Over the past 20 years, BIOKOM Nonprofit Kft. has undergone spectacular development, becoming the largest waste collection and treatment company in the southern Transdanubia region, and recognized at the national level. The serviced area of the BIOKOM group covers the city of Pécs and 300 surrounding settlements, which together means the supply of nearly 450,000 residents and 4,000 businesses.
As a result of the €65 million "Mecsek-Dráva" Program, realized after several years of preparation, landfills, sorting complexes, waste yards, transfer stations were built, and the machinery necessary for these, as well as collection vehicles serving the population, were purchased. With the implementation of the Mecsek-Dráva Program, a complex, modern, but at the same time cost-effective collection system was introduced in Pécs, in which full-scale selective collection and processing of residual waste for energy purposes is realized. Thanks to this, the amount of landfilled waste dropped below 30%.
Kft. also performs the city management tasks of the Pécs municipality within the framework of a public service contract, which meant a significant reorganization and expansion of activities in the life of the company. The number of activity circles has expanded significantly, and now exceeds 90. In order to fulfill the tasks properly, the number of employees of the company also increased: the number of employees including the partner companies is more than 1,000 people. Ever since BIOKOM Nonprofit Kft. became the organization entrusted with city management, Pécs has had a self-owned company with properly trained and professionally committed personnel, which has taken over a significant proportion of the activities, established premises and provides the necessary tools, machines, and all this facilitates the economical performance of tasks.
The activities of BIOKOM Nonprofit Kft. include the operation and maintenance of Pécs City's public road and sidewalk areas, bus stops, clearing of snow and slippery roads, pothole repair, roadways and road accessories, and maintenance of bridges and retaining walls.
Kft. provides a road inspection service in the area of the Pécs County City, during which it inspects approximately 2,000 km of main and public transport roads per month, repairing nearly 50,000 m2 of road surface each year. In order to prevent dangerous situations on the road, it operates a round-the-clock traffic safety call, the on-site investigation of incoming reports (police, residents, etc.) is continuous, and immediate action is taken if necessary.
Tasks include water damage prevention, maintenance of surface watercourses and three lakes, as well as maintenance of closed storm drains. The company places great emphasis on prevention in this area, as the extreme weather conditions of recent years can cause unexpected events.
Its scope of activities includes the maintenance of active elements of public lighting, as well as the purchase of electricity needs arising in connection with city operations (traffic control lights, event cabinets, decorative lighting, fountains).
BIOKOM operates the Mobility Center, which constantly monitors the continuity of urban transport, organizes and coordinates local public transport in Pécs. Its task is also to inform the passenger; timetable and bus network planning; parking operation, entry permits; utilization of public space; coordination of traffic control and traffic engineering tasks.
The Kft. takes care of the organization of urban green space management, the maintenance of nursery gardens, the performance of public cleaning tasks, the cleaning of public roads, sidewalks, parks, and bus stops; on manual snow and slippery removal, as well as on urban forestry. In terms of the latter's activities, it primarily takes care of forests for recreational purposes with specially nature-friendly (Pro Silva) methods.
In addition to the above tasks, BIOKOM operates the Pécs Public Cemetery and organizes public employment.
In addition to these, BIOKOM Nonprofit Kft., together with the Ökováros–Ökorégió Foundation, considers the development of children's environmentally conscious way of thinking, the promotion of environmental education, education and consciousness-raising in Pécs and the southern Transdanubia region to be a priority.
