Belau Garbage and Scrap Company (BG &SC)

Brief Background

BG & SC was established in 1987 in response to the development growth and resulting impact on the pristine environment of the Republic of Palau.  As it is, Palau communities have become more conscious about the environment and the negative impacts of consumer goods manufactured elsewhere and imported in containers to satisfy local demand for such.  Consequently, our island nation is faced with the situation of protecting our environment by reducing waste.  This present condition provides the opportunity, both to the private sector and the community with the government of Palau's support to preserve our pristine environment and at the same time realize benefits from this scheme.

Products

Our products are:  Aluminum cans, scrap aluminums, plastic bottles (pet bottles), and scrap copper (various grades or category). We are able to produce and sell approximately 20 tons of aluminum cans and 10 tons of plastic bottles every month.  All of our products are compressed/compacted into pallets of approximately 600lbs.

Mode of Collection

Our collection is done thru a central collection warehouse and community outreach.  Respectively, our central collection warehouse receives collections from individuals in the community; our outreach program respond to calls from individuals in the community and schedules pick ups for processing when received at thecentral wharehouse.  These shemes have ensured a steady flow of recyclable materials and stable business operation.

Machinery and Equipments

BG & SC is equiped with two (2) compactors, one for compacting plastic bottles, and, one for compacting aluminum cans.  Both compactors compress products into bales for stacking and shipment.

In addition, we have one (1) forklift, two trucks for transporting products from the communities, to shipping lines, port, etc.

Employees

BG & SC presently employs ten (10) personnel on full time basis.  Most of them are trained and knowledgeable in the collection, processing and preparing our products for shipment to dealers within and outside the Republic of Palau.  A minimal number perform administrative duties and functions, which include accounting and payroll, payment vouchers, shipping schedules and arrangents and other relevant functions.
