In 1977, William J. Cofer had a vision, he acted on it and B.C. Automotive, an auto repair garage, opened on North Sheridan Rd in Zion, Illinois.  In its grassroots stage, Cofer worked very long hours, persevering to see the business through.

Several dedicated people, including two teenagers, Cofer’s sons Steve and Ron Slocum, labored with him.

In 1981, the business moved to 2809 Damascus Ave, where it stands today, now as a “Recycling Facility” for new and used recycled car and truck parts.

Cofer died in June 2005 but he left behind many memories; his love for stock car racing, also his ability to restore classic and antique vehicles, which he later entered in local automotive events including Zion’s Nostalgia days.  Cofer helped organize Nostalgia Days for many years.  He was also the past president of the Zion Business Association, and active member of the Zion Chamber of Commerce and the Zion Historical Society.

Most importantly, Cofer turned his small business into a thriving family business, employing many of his children and grandchildren, giving them their first job experience in life.  Steve and Ron spent many long hours, made many sacrifices and added their own ideas to assist the business in its continued development.

B.C Automotive is part of the City of Zion’s Recycling Program which coincides with the EPA’s stringent policies.  Waste oil, antifreeze, scrap metal and tires are some of the materials B.C Automotive disposes of free of charge, except for a small fee for tires.
